Chief Engineer 57

THIS WEEKEND IS BALTIMORE COMIC CON!!!

Baltimore Comic Con

I will be in the Artist Alley at table A164 with Fancy Bastard Alex (Mechamenchi) at my side. Baltimore FB meetup will be Saturday night August 28th around 7:30 or 8pm. We will meet up outside the convention center and go to an eating establishment within walking distance. 4 or 5 of you have already said you’d be coming, but the more the fancier. Please comment below of you think you will be able to make it.

Follow me on TWITTER for updates on the Meetup as we get the plans finalized.

I was thinking about Star Trek: The Next Generation (because I was awake) and I posed this question to my followers on Twitter: “Did every series after TOS strive to fill the same roles as the original with character analogs (Spock-> Data-> Doctor+Tuvok), or did each of the series create characters that fit existing archetypes from modern story telling, tv, movies, etc?”

I got a lot of great responses and I have my own theories, but I’d like to open the question to the greater Fancy Bastards at large. So for your COMMENT CHALLENGE, please feel free to expand on the question above or offer more details about what TNG with Snipes would be like. I know for a fact he would refer to the Jefferies tubes as “Snipes’ Pipes.” Inversely he would call his bong a Jefferies Tube.

  1. Mentioning red, Geordi wore a red uniform in the first season and he was the pilot, not chief engineer. Apologies for nitpicking because the idea is great.

  2. I think it's far more interesting to think what would happen if Wesley Snipes and Data were best friends. I can't think of anything more badass. Android plus Vampire Hunter flying through space.

  3. Interesting question, and a difficult one to answer.
I don't' think it's purely Star Trek that uses sci-fi archetpyal characters. Or perhaps Star Trek (the original) created the archetypes that all other sci-fi, space travel shows would attempt to fill.

To wit: Try telling me that D'Argo doesn't fill Warf's shoes of "angry warrior alien"
John Crichton was one part Captain Kirk (tough guy explorer) and one part Arthur Dent (accidental traveler).

I think the hard part would be to name what all the archetypes are.
Science/facts – Data, Spock, Samantha Carter, etc.
Angry Alien – Warf, D'Argo, Quark?
Tough guy – Kirk, Riker (he wishes), Odo

    and the list goes on…

  4. I'll be at Baltimore comic-con again this year, can't wait to meet up with you guys again. I'd be happy to help out again like last year.

  5. I'm guessing that Wesley Snipes wouldn't have had any problems getting the ladies! And you better not be messing with the Warp Core or watch out! I just imagined how awesome it would be Wesley Snipes with a katana and Worf with his batleth chopping down some Borg!

  6. On a somewhat related note I saw Brent Spiner and John de Lancie at Comic Con Chicago. As well as Shatner, Avery Brooks, Walter Koenig half the cast of Battlestar Galactica, Linda Hamilton and Clark's Dad from from Smallville who's name escapes me right now. It was an awesome experience. Wish you could have been there Joel. If the cast of celebs is half that good next year I'm so going!

  7. The outtake reel would take on a whole new feel from his overreactions every time somebody said "Shut up, Wesley!"

  8. sorry didn’t live up to the challenge posted above, but I am curious how a juxtisposition between jeffersons, star trek, and Tyler Perry’s row 11 as seen on Conan would look, (if not in the know, Conan has a skit on his TBS show in which Tyler Perry has a show that airs within Conan’s show). Not all that creative but Sherman Hemsley and crew moved on up and the mini show would be the Jefferson Tubes,

    but yeah anyway

i love this stuff man. just love it
