I wrote this comic right after the Fringe season 2 finale last week, but it was unfortunately preempted by a couple of LOST comics. This is really a shame because part of my job is to relate to you, gentle Fancy Bastard, what I think is worthy of your geeky time, attention and monies. And though the point of deciding between the two series is rendered moot by the completion of one of them (LOST SPOILERS: Everyone dies! No really. Everyone. You, me, everyone eventually dies), Fringe is the one scifi show above all others currently in production that I can say, “IF YOU AREN’T WATCHING IT, YOU SHOULD BE!” It is by far the most satisfying science fiction on TV.

The initial problems I had with Fringe season 1, and the beginning of season 2 is that they had an extraordinary main story arch (there is at least one parallel universe along side ours, one of them has to go for the other to survive and neither side is going down without a fight) which they tended to ignore in favor of “freak of the week” type story lines. This was less a flaw of the writing/direction of Fringe and more of a testament to how badly I personally wanted to know more about the “other side.” I realize now that they stand alone episodes probably made the show more accessible to those just jumping in at any random point in the first season.

Anyway, if you haven’t already, blow through season 1 and get to the tasty story-meats of season 2 as fast as possible. Take consideration to enjoy season one and get to know the characters, but the story doesn’t really start to unfold in a highly satisfactory way until season 2. Honestly, other than Walter (John “Denethor” Noble) most of the characters don’t really find their own identities until the second season. That said, the series is highly enjoyable and manages to do what LOST and BSG always seemed to struggle with. Which is to meld SCIENCE and FICTION in an emotionally and intellectually satisfying way without resorting to magic.

I just realized that I didn’t talk about Leonard Nimoy at all. Oh well. Fringe is great.

    Well, with Lost there was "The Constant". But otherwise, yeah. That's actually a reason why I personally don't really have much complaints with the finale though.

    But back to Fringe: Yes it is awesome and everyone should be watchign it.

  2. Are you high? I’m not going to trust Abrams again, not after how he ended Lost.

    No Fringe for me, thanks.

    <Insert Doctor Who spam here>

    • Who, oh, why, doesn't Doctor Who get the nerd cred it deserves here in the States! It is SO good, and the new Doctor is surprisingly fantastic, especially considering I was a big fan of the Tenth Doctor and was fully expecting to hate the new guy. Plus Amy Pond is so hot it should be illegal. <3

    • TBF, when RTD was at the helm, the Doctor solved far too many roblems by just waving his Sonic Screwdriver at them, 'Magic' by another name… Great fiction, but the science can be somewhat shonky…

  4. "42 min later"? Hmmmmmm… sounds to me like an episode they would do. One character holding onto a ledge the whole time. Maybe that'll be how Olivia… well, spoiler's and all. But those of you that have seen it know what I'm talking about.

  5. Fringe does awesome things with their own opening credits. Specifically, they've turned it red with next season spoilers, they've done an 80's version, and something else I can't quite remember.

    I have been enjoying it very much, mostly for the fringe science and plots, but partly because they didn't cast a "classic" beauty as the leading lady. She looks like all the real women I see in my city.

    • BlueNight — I gotta ask, where do "all the real women" look like Anna Torv? I don't know exactly how we describe "classic beauty," but I would say, she's a few rungs above your average level of attractiveness, no?

  6. Congratulations Joel! You just convinced me to watch season 2! I stopped watching after Season 1 Episode 10 (the one with the guy in the safe), because I was just bored with the freak of the week premise, and after 10 episodes, didn't get enough of the main story to care about it. Rather than finishing season 1 (which was the reason I stopped in the first place), I'm just going to skip to season 2. Hopefully I don't end up confused and get up to speed quickly!

    • If you're going to skip ahead then skip to the season 1 finale or the episode just before.

      Trust me, you'll see why…

  7. JJ Abrams also seems capable of making Nimoy look a thousand years old in star trek or like 20 years younger in Fringe….I think he has access to a real "The Island."
