Potter And Daughter is a Harry Potter themed podcast where Joel Watson (cartoonist, geek dad and creator of the online comic HijiNKS ENSUE) talks to his eight year old daughter, Lily, as she reads through the Harry Potter book series.

In each episode Joel and Lily cover about 1/4 to 1/5 of a book, discussing what happened, why it happened and what lessons Lily is learning from the books as she reads them. It’s part Cliff’s Notes and part cute and instrospective conversation between a father and daughter who love the same books for the same (and sometimes totally different) reasons.

In episode thirteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily tackle chapters 10-18 of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire. After the life threatening danger at the Quidditch World Cup, Harry heads to Hogwarts (the place where his life is USUALLY in danger) which is hosting the Tri-Wizard Tournament, Harry has a mad new professor with some unforgivable lessons, visiting students arrive at by sea and sky, Harry’s ears are burning and so is a goblet when his name comes up in an unexpected place, and Harry finds that his friends are quick to turn away when they suspect him to be a stinker.

In the twelfth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily discuss the the first 9 chapters of Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, which deals almost exclusively with the Quidditch World Cup. It’s all nearly all Quidditch, mostly all of the time. At least it is until the Death Eaters show up and cast a dark mark over the festivities.

In the eleventh episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily’s discuss the dramatic conclusion of Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban, covering chapters 19 through 22. Harry’s world is turned upside down by what he’s learned from Sirius and Lupin, Peter Pettigrew’s true allegiance is revealed, Harry seeks justice for his parents but finds the job of executioner harder than it seems, a full moon derails everyone’s plans, Harry nearly receives the kiss of something-worse-than-death, and the secret Hermione has been keeping all year is finally revealed! Joel also takes Lily down the time travel rabbit hole and explains what a problematic plot device it can be in sci-fi and fantasy and why it must be used sparingly. Harry and Hermione attempt to right the wrongs of the previous day while saving two innocent lives and Harry finds a strength within himself he never knew he possessed.

In the tenth episode of Potter And Daughter, Joel and Lily attempt to cover the remainder of book 3,  Harry Potter And The Prisoner of Azkaban, but only manage to get through chapters 15-18 in an hour. There’s just too much to talk about in the final riveting act of this book (which happens to be my wife’s and Lily’s mother’s favorite in the series). “Like what?” you ask. Like the Quidditch final between Slytherin and Gryffindor, O.W.L.s and N.E.W.T.s, the fate of Buckbeak, Professor Trelawney’s ever more grim and specific predictions for Harry’s future, Harry’s first (and final?) confrontation with the notorious Sirius Black, unexpected revelations from Professor Lupin (several, actually) and the truth about Order Of Merlin First Class award recipient Peter Pettigrew!
