Potter And Daughter is a Harry Potter themed podcast where Joel Watson (cartoonist, geek dad and creator of the online comic HijiNKS ENSUE) talks to his eight year old daughter, Lily, as she reads through the Harry Potter book series.

In each episode Joel and Lily cover about 1/4 to 1/5 of a book, discussing what happened, why it happened and what lessons Lily is learning from the books as she reads them. It’s part Cliff’s Notes and part cute and instrospective conversation between a father and daughter who love the same books for the same (and sometimes totally different) reasons.

In episode twenty-three of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily begin Harry Potter And The Half Blood Prince by discussing chapters 1-6. We get our first glimpse of Ministry/Muggle intergovernmental cooperation, Professor Snape is definitely a double agent, though his true loyalties are now unclear and Dumbledore fetches Harry from Privet Drive and reinforces a warning he’d previously delivered to the Dursleys. Dumbledore hopes Harry will be the bait in the hook to reel in Hogwarts’ new Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher. Not everyone is crazy about the soon-to-be new addition to the Weasley family and Drago takes a Nocturne Alley detour to deliver a message for the Dark Lord.

In episode twenty-two of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily wrap up Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix by discussing chapters 33-38. Harry is in a hurry to save Sirius, but first he must deal with the meddling Professor Umbridge. Harry and his friend take flight to London, and find a multitude of mysteries waiting for them at the Ministry of Magic. Deatheaters face off with students for control of the prophecy, and Dumbledore faces Lord Voldemort in single combat. Harry suffers a loss too great to bear. Just as he is willing to give up the fight, Dumbledore finally opens up to him and begins to prepare Harry for the war to come.

In episode twenty-one of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily discuss Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix chapters 27-32. Hogwarts gets a new teacher who’s half creature, The DA is betrayed, Dumbledore is ousted from Hogwarts and Fred and George stage a spectacular exit of their own. Harry sees his father in a new, dimmer light, Hagrid returns with a secret hidden in the Forbidden Forest, Ron has a Quidditch victory without Harry’s help and, as O.W.L. testing begins, Harry fears for the safety of his godfather.

Hagrid gets back from his secret mission and, from the looks of him, things didn’t go as well as he’d hoped. Umbridge sets her “evaluating eye” squarely on Hagrid as Harry shares a moment with Cho. Mr. Weasley is hospitalized after a brutal attack and the kids spend a the holidays at St. Mungo’s. Snape begins training Harry on how to protect his mind, and Hermione concocts a plan to get Harry’s story out to the Wizarding world.

In episode nineteen of Potter And Daughter Joel and Lily discuss Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix chapters 13-19. Harry begins to see what happens when the paranoid and fearful hand of The Ministry begins to tighten its grip around Hogwarts. Harry has his first of several detentions with Deloris Umbridge and her “enhanced” punishment techniques. Dumbledore is still keeping his distance from Harry, and Hagrid is nowhere to be seen. Hermione advises Harry to take his, and the rest of the students’, educations into his own hands not to keep their grades up, rather to keep them alive in the dark days to come.
