Special Delivery

Today is iPhone 3Gs delivery day. I’ve been refreshing FedEx’s tracking page every 45 seconds for 8 hours.

  • Jun 19, 2009 4:18 AM – At dest sort facility – DALLAS, TX
  • Jun 19, 2009 6:58 AM – At local FedEx facility – ADDISON, TX
  • Jun 19, 2009 8:32 AM – On FedEx vehicle for delivery – ADDISON, TX
  • Jun 19, 2009 10:14 AM – Driving around Dallas. Sure is a nice day for a drive
  • Jun 19, 2009 11:57 AM – Still not at your house. Maybe the driver stopped for a sandwich
  • Jun 19, 2009 1:34 PM – Bet you’re getting anxious now. Calm down, dick hole. It’s just a fucking phone.
  • Jun 19, 2009 2:18 PM – Hey! The truck just pulled up to your house!
  • Jun 19, 2009 2:19 PM – Psyche! What a dipshit.
  • Jun 19, 2009 2:25 PM – No, seriously, it’s there. Go look out the window [quick take a picture of his face when he realizes… OHHH! BURN! THAT SHIT WAS PRICELESS! Send that to Fail Blog!]

And so it goes. To update my previous tale of iPhone 3GS ordering woe, Apple actually cancelled one of my orders arbitrarily. I called AT&T since Apple blamed them for the cancellation and they said both Apple and AT-AT AT&T have been randomly cancelling orders with two phones for no reason and there was nothing they could do to fix it. I placed a new order in-store and they claim it will be here in 10 days. Unfortunately both mine and my wife’s old iPhones are alread on eBay destined for new homes. Oh well. There are much worse problems to have. I hear in some parts of the world people don’t even HAVE access to 3g cellular data networks… and also they’re starving.

[this comic might be a two-parter]

Do you have a tale of waiting in line today?

  1. This is truly an epic moment. That last panel is amazing. The look on his face had me rolling. Damn!

  2. Wish I had one of those fancy iPhones, I'm still rocking my original enV. I hate Verison but I hate AT&T more. Whatever couldn't even afford one anyway. -_-; *sigh*

    • I hear ya. I'm in the same boat–only replace Verizon with Sprint.

Meh… I managed to survive the RAZR craze all those years back. We'll see how well I do against the iPhone. Going well so far, I think.

  3. I envy owners of these glossy little devices. From my small hut made of glued together student debt reports and pizza boxes. Using my phone that weighs more than me. 😉
I hope you enjoy your new shiny toys! They sound superb.

On a glorious note, it is Free RPG Day tomorrow. Check out the free geekery you can grab! http://www.freerpgday.com

  4. That's about what my wife did when our new Sims 3-approved video card arrived yesterday. That's why I love the Sims; every time a new Sims game comes out, Mrs. Zilch finally consents to upgrade our computer.

  5. i think we covered this on a really early podcast. The "original joel suit" was my favorite blue work shirt and maroon under shirt. I ditched the collar and used the style from my favorite blue longsleeve pullover. Its the same shirt but the stripes are white. I just wanted to keep the colors consistent. A while back and ditched the long sleeves.

  6. I can't help but think the last panel should be in patented PredaVision, with the target-lock on the phone.

(I hate cell phones. I'm not a gadget-geek in general, so while I sympathize with the general anxious anticipation of something you WANT WANT WANT, iPhones and iPods and PDAs and whatnot just don't do it for me.)

  7. About the 3G availability, that is the sole reason i have not upgraded from my first gen iPhone. Im in a city in GA called Milledgeville, and for the last 2 years we would have AT&T 3G network "In the next quarter." Pretty weird since we have 2 colleges with roughly 15,000 combined students. anyway it doesnt bother me too much as we will be getting one of the nations first 4G and WiMax capable areas. http://news.mywebpal.com/news_tool_v2.cfm?show=lo

  8. At least you work from home and could get yours the minute FedE ==> x stopped jerking you around. I had to wait til I got home.

It's a really lovely comic, Joel. Great storytelling and pacing, great drawing. Nicely done!

  9. I'm somehow not surprised in the least that AT&T is finding new an innovative ways to shaft their customers and generally cause them to regret getting into 2+ year contracts with them.

  10. I have almost nobody to call and am irritated by incoming calls. I don't know whether to envy or pity people like you.

  11. I'm so glad to see I'm not the only one who goes absolutely fucking mental waiting on packages (especially drums or electronics) to arrive. My wife loves watching me make a complete spectacle of myself: leaping up and tearing ass to the window with every passing truck. Checking the time, feverishly pounding the F5 key on the tracking tab, dreading that notice that "an exception has occurred," transplanting me neatly from the tower of hopeless optimism to the abyss of customer service damnation.

And God help us all if I order something from Woot (less than a twenty minute drive from my house) and it takes longer than two days to get to me, because I'll be teetering on the brink of madness with anticipation and frustration, watching the FedEX tracking dot carve wide, looping circles around the D/FW metroplex, the delivery driver cackling maniacally as he passes from suburb to suburb, denying me that blissful moment when the package is first opened, and the bounty within first revealed.

    I have issues, I know.

    • My wife used to work down the street from the Woot Office in Farmer's branch. A few things Ive ordered have been here next day due to proximity.

The day the phone arrived they were doing construction down the street. Every "large truck sound" I heard prompted a look out the window. Eventually I turned off my iMac and angled it to window so I could use the screen as a mirror.
