I didn’t realize until after I got home from Emerald City Comicon that I had forgotten to mention the 4 year anniversary of The Experiment. I have officially been professionally unemployed making comics for 4 years as of March 31, 2012. People used to ask me all the time, ” How is the experiment going?” To which I would reply, “It’s going. I’m still doing it. There are ups and downs, but I haven’t given up.” The more and more I gave that answer, which I thought to be a bit an over simplified response seeing as how I didn’t want to get into the details of nearly missed mortgage payments, mounting credit card debt due to travel expenses and rest of the struggles that come with self employment with every person that asked, the more I realized it was actually the most honest answer I could give. There wasn’t actually an end goal for The Experiment. I never said, “If I can do this for 5 years, I have won.” The goal was to just keep doing it. To keep making comics for a living. To sustain myself and my family through following my passion and doing what I love. The unspecified addendum to that ideal was that in order for it to be a success, I had to keep doing it forever. So the actual and honest response to, “How’s The Experiment going?” is “As long as this is my job, I am winning.”
It’s only been live for a few hours so there are still some kinks to work out, and organizational things I plan on addressing, but for now please go check it out and maybe buy a book or a shirt or something. Shirts will be shipping soon after we all get back from Comic-Con.
You will also notice that the “Doctor Is In” shirt has moved from Sharksplode over to The HE Store. I did this because it was based on an HE comic and should be in the place where I am selling things based on the comic. After talking to Wil, we decided that instead of having Sharksplode as my second comic-related store (a confusing proposition for the reader, I admit) that it would instead be more useful as a repository of shirts and what not created from our random geeky ideas. I like this idea. I like this idea a lot.
Major thanks to Becker and the rest of the Blind Ferret team for getting this store up and running while they are simultaneously scrambling around to get to San Diego Comic-Con.
What’re you waiting for?! GO BUY SUMFIN!
After this week The HijiNKS ENSUE Store will be shutting down for a at least a couple of weeks for some retooling. There are lots of wonderfully exciting things going on behind the scenes right now that will allow me to focus more on comicing and less on the day to day headaches of running a small business (merchandise, convention preparations, travel, etc). I will make an announcement soon, but the first step is getting the store in order.
If you want something that is currently in the HE Store, you only have until the end of this week (Saturday 6/18/11) to get it before the store is shuttered for a few weeks. Even after the store is relaunched, the thing you want might not be available for a while. So go get stuff while the stuff gettin’s good!
There are several shirt designs that won’t be reprinted once the current stock is gone. Please check out this blog post to see which designs won’t be coming back, in case you want one of those.
THE PREORDER IS OVER BUT YOU CAN STILL ORDER THE BOOK!
The pallet of over 1000 books arrived at my house on 3/3/11. Immediately I left for Seattle, got home and left again for Chicago. Shipping books is my #1 priority now that C2E2 is over and I don’t have another con for about a month.
All Non-Artist Regular Editions have been shipped. Regular Artist editions are shipping now as I sketch them (usually in bundles of 10 or so). Non-Artist-UFE’s will all be leaving within 1 week of this post. There was a hold up on one of the stickers, but now all the goodies are in and can head out to you. UFE Artist Editions will also be leaving as I sketch them. This may take a little while because I refuse to do the “30 second sketch” you get from a lot of cartoonists. I will take the time to make your sketch special, so please be patient and bear with me. Thanks!
If you order the book (regular or artist edition) now, it will ship based on the rules outlined above.
Check the links below to see some of the Artist Edition Sketches I have already shipped out.
UPDATE 4/7: All Non-Artist Edition UFE’s have shipped.
UPDATE 4/11: All Regular Artist-Editions (save for a few special cases) have shipped.
UPDATE 7/1/11: All Preorders, UFE’s, etc have been shipped!!!
OMG EMERALD CITY COMICON IS THIS WEEKEND!!! It is by far my favorite show of the year. Come see me and Angela at booth 307. Here’s a MAP to all the other webcomics I know that will be there. I will be at the Marian Call show in Seattle Thursday night. If any Fancy Bastards are in the audience, feel free to comic up and say hi. Due to my traveling, there will an unusual comic schedule this week. Probably a guest comic and maybe a few more Lo-FiJINKS comics than normal await you.
I will have Book 1 AND BOOK 2 FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER, prints, buttons and sketch cards!
Airfare, hotels, boothspace, merch, shipping, etc for con season have really hit me hard financially. I really enjoy doing these shows, but the costs can get overwhelming. If you would like to help out, please consider making a DONATION. Thanks!
