Winter Is Coming

UPDATE: “Winter Is Coming” shirts are now IN THE STORE!!!

I’ve been tossing this Calvin and Hobbes meets Game of Thrones idea around for a while. Originally it was going to be Calvin/Jon Snow and Hobbes/Sam standing atop the wall mirroring the dialog from the final Calvin And Hobbes strip, ending with “Let’s Go Exploring.” As I was doing research for reference images I came across the cover to the Attack… collection and realized it was basically already a scene out of GoT, complete with a White Walker and everything. So there you go. I hope you enjoy it.

Joel Watson of HijiNKS ENSUE at Baltimore Comicon 2011

Baltimore Comic-Con is this weekend! I will be in the Artist Alley right next to Dannielle Corsetto at Table #A187 or so. I will have books 1 and 2, “The Doctor Is In” shirts, “Team Edward [James Olmos]” shirts and “Ewok Stare” shirts, plus prints, stickers and Fancy Sketches.

We have had a really fantastic Fancy Bastard meetup each year. Details HERE on G+ or talk to FB Adam (who is organizing it) directly on G+ or Twitter. Hope to see you at the show and the meetup!

Commenters: Please come up with your own Game Of Thrones/ Sunday Comics crossover and let us know how it plays out. I’ll get you started: The Family Circus as the Lannisters. Jeffy = Joffrey? Right? Amirite?

UPDATE: You asked for it, so I added a “Winter Is Coming” desktop to The Vault. I’ve also added “Chibi Wolverine” and “Three Wheaton Moon” desktops as well. Just make a donation of any amount, or sign up for a recurring donation subscriptionand you’ll get access. I’ve also added mobile versions of these desktops HERE.

  1. That's. Freaking. Awesome.
Cersei = Cathy (I do loathe them both)
    Tyrion = Jeremy from Zits
Jamie = Prince Valiant (of course)

I don't know about Ned Stark. Is there a sunday funny about a headless dude?

  2. Nice job aping Watterson, which isn't as easy as it looks. It almost makes me want to watch GoT so I can appreciate this better. Almost.

  3. See, things like THIS are why Secretary of Geek Affairs Wil Wheaton hangs out with you!
    Pure awesome brilliance.

And I hereby join the masses clamouring for this to be a t-shirt and/or desktop! A mousepad! A mug! A QUILT!

  4. I'd love to see Mary Worth try to solve everyone's problems.

But the image/comic I've been enjoying in my head is a "Song of Ice and Voltron" — as in "Oh no, Winter is Coming! Westerotron Unite! Stark Wolf! *ZAP* Stagatheon! *CLANG* Draggarion! *ROAR* Lannilion! *QUIP* Grey Squid! *SPLASH* And, uh, Blackfish? *SHRUG?* ASSEMBLE!"

And then they'd turn into a massive multi-bannered robot.

And then the massive robot would start punching itself.

  5. A Family Circus crossover would work if you did one of those dotted line things for Bran showing him climbing all over Winterfell, ending of course in a swan dive from the Old Tower.

  6. Someone else's use of the word "Zap" in All Caps jumped right from the page to my brain before I could read the rest of his comment and I was too busy thinking about Futurama/ASOIAF crossover fun.

Unfortunately the best I've come up with is Zap Brannigan as Jaime, with Kif as a possible Tyrion. Bender could also be a decent Tyrion. I suppose Mom would be Cersei, thus making Walt, Larry, and Igner Joffrey, Tommen and Myrcella.

Everyone else? Well, go Internet, go!

  7. Heh — the idea of Billy/Bran getting tossed out of a tower after interrupting the incestuous coitus of "Not Me" and "Ida Know" is a thing of beauty. And, provides an excuse to track down an old comic I did a million years ago called "The Blair Family Circus"… Hurrah!

  8. Alright, I'm thinking Robert Baratheon as Hagar the Horrible, with Eddard Stark making the occasional appearance as "Lucky Eddie".

Panel one begins the strip with a close-up of Robert saying "You know, in hindsight…"

Then cut to a lengthened panel two ending the dialogue with, "…I really should have seen this coming." and showing Robert lying on his death bed, Eddard standing next to him on one side with a particularly devious looking Lord Baelish pressing a knife to his throat, and Jaime and Cersei Lannister going at it on the other, while the background is riddled with a mixture of rampaging Lannister soldiers, Dothraki riders, and Others.

    • Sarge from Beetle Bailey would make a perfect Stannis Baratheon. Humorless, easily angered. Not as fun-loving or handsome as his older brother…

  9. As much as I like this, selling it as a t-shirt is kind of giving the middle finger to Watterson. Anyone who knows the story behind the strip knows he was against the commercialization of his art, because it went against the strong anti-consumerist message of his work. To make coin from a "tribute" is to say "We like the funny snowmen, but keep the preaching to yourself, Bill," and completely disregards half his message. He gave up millions of dollars in licencing royalties to keep his strip pure. I guess he doesn't care; it's not like he's not coming out of seclusion to sue all the companies who made those stupid Calvin window decals, but to divorce art from intent for the sake of profit, particularly when the intent of the artist was to avoid excessive profit, seems somehow spiritually criminal. I know it's tough for web comic artists to turn a buck, but how do you think Bill Watterson would react if he saw a shirt like this?
