“George Hurt You” shirts are in the store!!!
Me, Randy Milholland, David Willis, Danielle Corsetto, Jeph Jaques, Rob Denbleyker and MORE will be at the Dragon’s Lair Webcomic Rampage panel/signing event on December 10th and 11th. It is always a good time. Austin Fancy Bastards should NOT miss it.
Of the recent slate of new shows, I’d have to say American Horror Story is probably my favorite. That title comes with an asterisk, however. The creators of the show, are also the creators of Nip/Tuck and Glee. Their pedigree screams, “GREAT CONCEPT! GREAT FIRST SEASON! THEN EVERYONE STARTS ACTING LIKE CARTOONS AND THE WHOLE THING TAKES THE SUCK TRAIN TO SHIT TOWN FOR 5 MORE SEASONS!!!” AHS has been showing some of the Nip/Tuck stink since day one (in that people, haunted or not, continually behave in ways that human beings would never behave, so much so that it begins to distract you from the story), but it has managed to balance that out by also keeping the plot moving and continually surprising the viewer.
It also suffers a bit from having no likable characters. Not one. Not one who is living, at least. Some of the ghosts are sympathetic, but they also suffer from being extremely one note as ghosts are wont to do. I get the idea that being stuck between realms with unfinished business might lead one to having a very singular focus, but eventually the ghosts constantly chanting their one desire over and over gets annoying. Add to that the fact and all of the living human characters are also dumb as tombstones and things get more annoying still. The ghosts are the only ones that seems to have understandable motivation. “I was murdered and I am pissed about that HAUNT HAUNT HAUNT” is more relatable than “If we move out of this crazy murder house where ghosts keep trying to murder us with ghost murder we would be upside down on the mortgage.” That said, these are flaws in what is still a VERY compelling show. Jessica Lange just steals the screen every time she’s on it. The whole thing is almost worth it just for her performance. I give it a strong recommendation, especially considering this week’s episode, which was a real game changer for the series. Just as it seemed like they had already run the entire course of the premise they have found a way to keep the family connected to the house for the foreseeable future, which is not contrived or lazy.
I do kind of want to see Quinto and the other ghost-gay get the babies. My Two Ghost Dads would be a fantastic phantasmic spin-off.
- American Horror Story confirms [REDACTED FOR MAJOR SPOILERS]
- What is it about being dead on American Horror Story that makes the ghosts so damn horny?
COMMENTERS: I was a little harsh on American Horror Story the first time around, but now I’ve warmed up to its cold, dead, etherial fingers. Have you given it a shot? What do you think? NO SPOILERS IN THE COMMENTS PLEASE, considering the severity of this week’s episode.
yes but Connie Britton is just so ridiculously smoking hot that i feel I would watch her polish the stained glass for 44 minutes if that's what the writers decided to do.
Agreed, I think they were trying to set the record for the most number of gratuitously zoomed in bare ass shots in one series, which I am completely ok with.
Ha, I didn't know the actors name and I just assumed you were talking about the Maid. Which is who I was referring to above
And is it just the maid's moneymaker or is Britton's behind shown off as well? I watched a few episodes of Nip/Tuck, when they had Famke Jensen (sp?) on it, & they showed off Famke's fanny (Alliteration's Awesome, eh?).
What? They show her bare ass?! HOT DIGGETY DAMN, I'M THERE!!!"
Wait. Young maid, or lady from "Six feet under" maid?
Cause I'm not gonna lie, I think I can make it work with either.
So are they stuck in the house or aren't they? Some of them left the property a few times, maybe they could because it was around Halloween.
I keep wondering if its possible for this show to jump the shark. Even Nip/Tuck was veiled in a light sheen of normality so at a certain point so much crazy shit happened it became ridiculous. But with AHS it was crazyballs right from the start.
I have a feeling Halloween was special.
Based on your first time around comments ( http://hijinksensue.com/2011/11/02/a-real-fixer-u… ) and other comments (from other people whose opinions I trust) and various adverts for the show, I wasn't in the least bit interested in watching it. I'm not feeling like I missed out on anything but maybe I should have given it a shot and ignored the whole damn lot of you (and my suspicion that it was all over-hyped).
On the other hand, I suffered through the Sylvester McCoy era of Dr Who so I'm, justifiably, cautious about my viewing choices.
I thought Cosby had a real doctorate degree in education.
He has numerous honorary doctorates from various universities. He studied Phys Ed at Temple U.
No… he has a very real Ph.D. in Education. His doctoral thesis went through the usual peer-review and was defended. It has also been archived and is available, if you know where to look (which is why I have a copy of it).
His thesis topic was on the potential use of Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids as a tool in inner-city classrooms to educate at-risk children, especially African-American children from low-income famiiles, with a focus on healthy social habits and attitudes.
Again: his Ph.D. is real and he worked his ass off for it.
AHS is ooookay, but my fiancee loves it, so we're watching it on the regular. That said, I read and enjoy a lot of webcomics, but rarely do I laugh out loud at them. This one made me laugh out loud.
And Bill Cosby does have a doctorate.
i might alter the speech a bit to reflect that. Let me think of something funny.
I dig American Horror Story. My husband and I are busy trying to figure out the rules for the ghosts in world they live in, but we haven't watched this week's episode, so our knowledge is woefully lacking at the moment.
I can't help but love this show. All the things that are wrong with it are things I find hysterical. One of the best new comedy shows this year. Though I do wish they would stop doing certain things for the pure shock value. It's not often but when they do, it's quite obvious.
"wont to be" not "want to do" Wont – Adjective: (of a person) In the habit of doing something
"I do kind of want to see Quinto and the other ghost-gay get the babies. My Two Ghost Dads would be a fantastic phantasmic spin-off."
It could also lead to the most quotable line when the kids are old enough to talk, "I love my dead gay ghost dads."
They're obviously trying to start a new show, "Hellspawn Demon Kids Possessed by Tormented Spirits Say the Darnest Things"
Come on, just because they're dead doesn't mean they can't pursue their dreams. They're just trying to get a baby the only way that a group of hard working poltergeists can. It's not like they can just buy a baby. They're not Disney.
Based on Joel's two comix I finally checked AHS out… I don't think I'll be DVRing it but holy cats, check out this fan-created trailer http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1t1y3fJZoL0 it's really good.
On the topic of babies being raised by ghosts, haven't you read Neil Gaiman's The Graveyard Book? That's pretty much literally what happens, and it's awesome.
I watched either the first 2 or the first 3 episodes and it wasn't enough to keep me going. Nothing really surprised me as a viewer, except that they expect me to watch a show that appears to be about nothing but death and sex. And sex. And near death.
I was insulted by the thought that the guy who barely saved his marriage would immediately be so distracted by the maid. I don't care what the maid does, most men are not so lowest-common-demonimator.
