UPDATE: You asked for it, so I added a “Chibi Wolverine” desktop to The Vault. I’ve also added “Winter Is Coming” and “Three Wheaton Moon” desktops as well. Just make a donation of any amount, or sign up for a recurring donation subscription and you’ll get access. I’ve also added mobile versions of these desktops HERE.

Long story short: Short mutant tall. I watched the premiere of Wolverine (Marvel Anime version) on G4TV and it just wasn’t for me. I’m not a huge anime fan to begin with, so let that color my opinions however you like. The show was done in my absolute least favorite style of anime. The “lovers exchanging long, silent looks over the ocean while 80’s casio keyboards set to vibraphone play softly in the distance… then everybody fights” style. It wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t Wolverine. This cat was about 24 years old, tall, slender and pointy in all the wrong places. From chin to Aladdin Sane-esque frock, he was all points. The only thing I really enjoyed about Wolvanime was the completely shoehorned moment reminding the audience”Hey! Wolverine is Canadian!” when the incredibly Japanese Logan is seen standing atop a random Manhattan building drinking a can of clearly labelled “CANADIAN BEER.” Yatta bub!

COMMENTERS: What other unexpected anime characteristics might Logan or any other Japanimated Marvel character have? What sort of situations might they find themselves in? Does Chibi-Charles Xavier have to catch (’em) all the mutants in order to be a true mutant training master?

Dallas Fancy Bastards! I am going to be at STRIP: The Dallas Webcomic Expo this Saturday [August 6th] from 10-5pm. It’s only $5 to get in. Come get a book or a sketch. It’s a very low key show and I’ll probably be doing a fun times panel with the dude from Cyanide and Happiness.

WATCH THIS WITH YOUR EYES! My friends Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt are both fantastic voice over actors (Yuri is the voice of Ben 10, Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto, and tons of video game characters, and Tara has voiced characters in Naruto, Final Fantasy XIII, Bleach and dozens of anime series and video games) and now they have stepped out of the booth, in front of the camera to create their own show. Shelf Life is a live action web series about four action figures living on a young boy’s shelf. It’s like Toy Story for those of us that grew up with He-Man and Spider-Man. You can watch the trailer HERE and check out the full series when it premieres later this summer. You can also follow them on the Facing Books.

Shelf Life - Funny Web series Super Heroes Toys, comedy web series

LAST THING: My AC died last week and living without AC in Texas is not an option. The new unit is costing me $3000. SPOILERS: I don’t have 1 thousand of dollars, let alone 3 of them. If you enjoy my ability to make comics without dying of heat stroke, please consider making a donation, buying something from the store or buying something from Sharksplode.

UPDATE: You wonderful Fancy Bastards have already donated nearly $650 towards the AC repairs. Thank you so very much. Your generosity means so much to me and my family.

        • Kill it – kill it with acid … errr …

Anywho – I watched the Anime version of the Marvel stories so far – the art style is classic X. ie long and slim and ruggedly handsome or boobalicious females no matter what the age.
One thing I noticed off the bat with the story sets so far – x-men, wolverine, iron man …. Blade is yet to end …. there is always at least one death close to the main character at the end. All followed by a melodramatic ending. Is it Marvel themselves or the studio that is doing this? I am thinking its a cooperative conglomeration of suck. Mind you if you don't think of them as the iconic characters that they are the stories are not half bad, then again there have been some really good series this spring that put a stake through the heart of these mini-series. Fractal / Gosick – Nuff Said

  1. Shouldn't chibi Logan-kun have only one fang? I look forward to Wolverine battling a giant purple robot made of five combined Sentinels. He'll fight it with a huge sword, of course.

I've been out of the loop lately, but I think Marvel's Sorcerer Supreme really was a Jamaican Dr Strange for the last couple years. Or was that the point, and there's a gay Lizard that I don't know about? Ooh, is he rainbow colored?

    • Yeah, Brother Voodoo took over as Sorcerer Supreme for a while.

My only real familiarity with him before that was the whole incident where he raised an entire battlefield graveyard as zombies. Doctor Strange remarked that he didn't realize Brother Voodoo could command that many zombies at once…and was told something along the lines of 'I can't – I figured you could handle things if they get out of control.'

I think he was also Sorcerer Supreme in the Age of Apocalypse setting.

  2. I await Magneto looking like a cross between Zero Wing's Cats, and Dragon Ball Z – Five minute power up still frame "All your mutants are belong to us"

  3. I tried to watch both this and the Iron Man. I made it about 5 minutes in before deciding it was crap and moving on.

  4. Wolverine will fight Magneto (who is now named Meganekko and is a giant cat-man) in a bamboo forest during a full moon. After launching energy blasts and teleporting around the treetops, Wolverine will begin charging up his Cannawoopa-assa ki attack for six minutes, all while Meganekko taunts him using rude honorifics while secretly admitting he admires Wolverine's heroic resolve.

Wolverine unleashes his ultimate attack, causing Meganekko to explode in a rain of beautiful cherry blossoms. As they rain down upon the battlefield, we see a closeup of Wolverine's face. His eyes are hidden by his unkempt hair, but we see manly tears running down his cheeks.

    • I cannot hit the like button as many times as this deserves.

…cue incredibly annoying J-Pop song that will be stuck in your head for weeks.

  5. Logan-kun shirt plz! I don't want a plushie because I don't want to be accused of being a…. well, a plushie.

  6. design quirks aside, (look at the preview version that design sucked ass) at least they went with mostly claremont era story lines.

  7. The irony that Logan's whole style comes partly from Toshiro Mifune and the like does not escape me. I haven't yet watched the anime version (with subtitles, please — no dubbing, ever, ugh) but he should indeed be more of a "Lone Wolf and Cub" kind of gruff ronin type rather than anything pretty-boyish. Perhaps something more bara-style from Gengoroh Tagame (warning: NSFW) than yaoi-style.

Even so, the chibi Logan is cute.

  8. More good MArvel anime news: in the English Dub, Iron Man is voiced by Adrian "Nathan Patrelli" Pasdar, and Wolverine is Milo "Peter Patrelli" Ventimig-I-can't-spell-his-last-name-to-save-my-life. It's a HEROES mini-reunion! Also, there's an X-MEN anime coming soon (with a shorter, hairier Wolverine, as you remember him) and Blade. My friends and I have been dabating which other Marvel heroes would turn into anime. Who do YOU guys think would fit?

  9. Well, the upside of marvel-anime, there's a lot more bouncing breasts and wardrobe malfunctions, (yay fan-service!) in anime.
Unlike western comics where a female hero's main power is always the magic ability to keep her huge bust inside a tiny top no mater what she's doing. And no mater how much battle damage the uniform takes, the "important" bits always survive.
if they make a girls of X-men in a bathhouse episode, you can count me in.

(that babbling aside, I completely forgot about that new series on G4, so can't say anything about it)

    • You should play the paper & dice game "Macho Women With Guns", where some of the disads are "Chafing" and "Topheavy"…

        • I just got back from GenCon and "top" heavy is not anywhere on the list except for the graphical depictions of male or female genders. If the news filler I just heard of hospitals needing longer needles to be able to pierce 'glutes then we all know what is getting "heavy". >_<
Only bonus for me was that I was a svelte gamer in that crowd.

  10. The interesting thing is that for a significant amount of time in Logan's life, he actually lived in Japan and gave himself over entirely to Japanese culture. It would have made more sense to base the anime on that period of Wolverine's life if they were going to do it like this.
