A Load Of Bullshirt

2014-05-09-a-load-of-bullshirt

UPDATE: You guys demanded it, so the Transformers shirt in the last panel is a real thing now.

Of course comic Joel is reacting to the shirt he saw in THIS COMIC in the only way he knows how: with equal measures of drawing dumb stuff and righteous indignation. That’ll show the world.

COMMENTERS: What’s the most ignorant of offensive t-shirt you’ve ever seen? It doesn’t have to be within the context of geek culture, but that might help to keep things in context. Please don’t get into political tees. That will open up a whole thing I don’t really want to get into on this site. What about the most right on, inclusive or inspirational tee you’ve seen?

Fancy Patrons got to see this comic a day early (albeit in a rough draft fashion).

Not All Menswear

2014-05-07-not-all-menswear

Hello new readers! I hope you are enjoying the comics. Please check out the ABOUT PAGE and then check out the ARCHIVE PAGE so you can see the different types of comics I’ve created and posted here over the years. You might also want to read about THE EXPERIMENT, follow me on TWITTER (and TUMBLR) or join our FANCY BASTARD FACEBOOK GROUP where we mostly talk about what’s currently on TV and other geekery.

I saw a parody of the now infamous Wondercon “Coffee shirt” that replaced the bottom line with “I’m terrified of coffee.” It’s frustrating when the internet gets upset over the typical depiction of the “Standard North American Fedora (yes, I know the hat is called a Tribly. The PERSON IN THE HAT is called a Fedora.),” with their half-formed mustaches, their intense and undeserved overconfidence about their hysterically shitty opinions and their  general obliviousness to why everyone is always trying to escape their orbit. This is not a stereotype. This is a fixture of the world in which I have chosen to make my home and ply my trade. Mysogyny is real, it is rampant in comics and geek culture and it’s a fucking cancer on an otherwise lovely and inclusive corner of The Internet/real world.

The comics I grew up on, and honestly most all of the comics that preceded them… well, shit, and MOST all of the comics today, fed and continue to feed this systemic malfunction like dry brush to the fire. You don’t have to read many super hero books to wonder why “men” raised on them have a skewed view of a woman’s value and place in the world. The super men were/are just as laughable, but their portrayal is far less damaging. Despite being impossibly muscled murder machines and one-liner factories, at least they had stuff to do. At least they were more than a pair of super powered quadruple F titties, hovering above 8 pack abs, wrapped around a 12″ waste. Granted, they weren’t MUCH more, but they were more.

I will admit that I haven’t regularly read a super hero book in about 15 years. I’ll pick up the occasional trade or one shot, but the genre as a whole doesn’t do much for me. I guess, I don’t really know the current state of things. I know what I see at conventions, which is exactly what I remember from my childhood. I’ve kept up with the new Buffy comics (seasons 8, 9 and the current season 10), which certainly break the mold in terms of how super powered women are portrayed. Though Buffy (in whatever incarnation) has always done that, so color me not surprised (though still delighted).

COMMENTERS: Ladies: Do you feel welcomed in the world of comics and conventions? What aspects of geekdom have brought you into the fold? What still needs to change? Which books/titles/fandoms are the most inclusive and accurate in their portrayal of women?

Men: When did you realize that super hero comics were sort of misogynist and fucked up? Was it Frank Miller? I bet it was Frank Miller.

The next Patron-ONLY Google Hangout is Wednesday night, May 13th at 9pm central. I will post the link in the Patreon Activity feed when it goes live. We’ll talk and I’ll draw. It’s a good time!

Merchandising 101

2014-04-16-merchandising-101

[actually posted on 4/22/14] Still playing catch up and still a week behind on comics. I have a pretty cool idea for how to get caught up this week, that I think many of you are going to enjoy. More on that when it’s actually a thing. I’ve also got a pretty sweet guest comic lined up for while I’m away at Calgary Expo.

CALGARY FANCY BASTARDS!

Calgary Expo 2014

I will be at Calgary Expo as part of Cyanide & Happiness in booth 622. It’ll be me and Rob Denbleyker doing stick figure dick sketches, and I’ll also have some HE prints and shirts.

RE: This comic
David’s a real person, and one of my best friends. I am also a real person. Comic Joel is a fictionalized version of myself. Comic David is a HYPER-fictionalized version of David IRL. I hate explaining jokes, but I thought it was necessary to explain this distinction to prevent anyone else from thinking I am being rude, or cruel to my actual real life friend.

Speaking of selling things related to comics TO people, AT places, a reader asked me for some business advice and I posted my answers to her questions here on my Tumblr.

STORE UPDATE!
Some of the shirts in the HE Store on are MAJORLY on sale, because they aren’t going to be printed again. Some are down to the last few sizes. Get ’em while you can! There are also some great PRINTS and POSTERS in the store. Your walls cry out for them.

Apparently they found an extra box of Lil’ Wils hiding in the warehouse, so there’s maybe 50 or 60 of these little dudes left between now and the heat death of The Universe.

The first ever HijiNKS HANGOUT was fun! My guests were be David Willis and Angela Melick and you can view the archived stream HERE. If you miss the HE Podcast, the HijiNKS HANGOUT is probably a thing that will make you happy. Tweet your discussion topics, questions and drawing challenges for the next one to #HijiNKSHangout.

New Shirt! George R.R. You Done Yet?

George R.R. You Done Yet? Shirt, A Game Of Thrones Parody Funny Shirt George R.R. Martin

I can’t wait until the Song Of Ice And Fire septilogy (or possibly octology) is completed and my great great grandchildren can read the final book to me. Of course some will say that the small moon that contains the A.I. super computer that houses George R.R. Martin‘s consciousness is colder and less emotive than the original flesh and blood author, but I’ll take comfort in his calculated and mechanical 5 page descriptions of each and every meal because it will remind me of what it was like to eat food before the ApocaCult unleashed their famine-droids to burn-destroy all our food-crops.

This idea had been floating around in my brain-head for a time-while, but after I saw Paul & Storm’s new video for “Write Like The Wind,” I decided it was time to take action-doings.

If you are anger-frustrated with sad-waiting for the next book, let George and the world know. Head on over to Sharksplode and check it out.

The HijiNKS ENSUE Store Is Back!

The all new, re-launched, Blind Ferret Powered  HIJINKS ENSUE STORE is up and fully operational.

Funny T-Shirts, Geeky shirts, Doctor who parody shirts, Team Edward James Olmos shirt, Groverfield Shirt, Sci-Five Star Trek Parody T-Shirt in The HijiNKS ENSUE Store

It’s only been live for a few hours so there are still some kinks to work out, and organizational things I plan on addressing, but for now please go check it out and maybe buy a book or a shirt or something. Shirts will be shipping soon after we all get back from Comic-Con.

You will also notice that the “Doctor Is In” shirt has moved from Sharksplode over to The HE Store. I did this because it was based on an HE comic and should be in the place where I am selling things based on the comic. After talking to Wil, we decided that instead of having Sharksplode as my second comic-related store (a confusing proposition for the reader, I admit) that it would instead be more useful as a repository of shirts and what not created from our random geeky ideas. I like this idea. I like this idea a lot.

Major thanks to Becker and the rest of the Blind Ferret team for getting this store up and running while they are simultaneously scrambling around to get to San Diego Comic-Con.

What’re you waiting for?! GO BUY SUMFIN!
