You can’t buy a cottage with hipster indie cred

2008-01-04-david-cross.jpgDavid Cross is fucking awesome. Kudos to him for not taking shit about being in “Alvin and the Chipmunks.” (Most) actors are real people and need to work to pay the bills. Sometimes that means showing up for 2 weeks of shooting a crappy movie so you can buy a house.

All you know about me is what Ive sold you,
Dumb fuck.
I sold out long before you ever heard my name.

I sold my soul to make a record,
Dip shit,
And you bought one.

  1. You gotta love David Cross.

…I suppose putting it that way, I can justify forgiving Jason Lee.
    …fucking underdog.

  2. I justify thusly: both of these fine gentlemen actors must’ve been as big a fans of the Chipmunks growing up as people in our generation were (and I don’t take that statement for granted, I’m generalizing for the sake of simplicity).

Ergo (hehe, I’ve always wanted to use that word), their roles next to the eponymous CG Chipmunks are an homage to arguably, the guiltiest of guilty pleasures from the 80s (for us who were young’uns back then, anyway).

  3. @ AJ –

Well, I can see where you’re coming from with that. It makes sense.

    You gotta love the 80’s.

  4. I bought a toothbrush with hipster indie cred but, once I got into my car outside the store, they said they needed “cash”. Like anyone carries that with ’em nowadays! Pff!

Ugh. That wasn’t as funny as I hoped it would be. At least I tried, I guess.

  5. @AJ
Maybe you’re right about Lee, but Cross makes it clear that he could give a shit about Alvin and the Chipmunks, being born too late for the first wave and too old for the second wave.

Anyway, on the topic of selling out, fuck all these asswads who criticize artists for selling out. It’s easy to be that way when you have a steady job, not so much when you’re one of the artists in question. Often, actors go long stretches without work and bands fall in and out of fashion. There are those who decide not to compromise their artistic works, and those who have bills to pay and live in the real world.

Is a guy in a band a bigger sell-out if he works at The Gap to pay the bills or signs with a major label? At least being flexible with your artistic integrity allows you to make a living doing what you love.

Sometimes, people are lucky enough to do what they love for good pay without making any compromises, but most aren’t. If an actor has to take a few shitty roles to both pay his mortgage and get some breathing room to find a role he loves, calling him a sell-out is ridiculous. He’s no more a sell-out you any of us were when we worked a shitty job while looking for our dream job.
