He Rises

2015-10-06-sharksplode-he-rises

I’m traveling for most of October and into November, so it’s time for an EXPERIMENT. I asked Twitter and Facebook to give me ideas for the first panel of a comic. Then I take those ideas and have to make an entire comic that comes AFTER that first panel! For this week the suggestion is “A man with a dog calls 911.” Since I’m at NYCC this week, I’ll be mostly reusing the art, but the dialog is all new.

My Patreon Patrons will be getting ENTIRELY different comics than the ones posted on this site. You’ll be getting 4-5 comics this week, and they’ll be getting TEN. Sign up to be a Patron and you’ll get them all too!

I have enough suggestions to go for months, but if you want to toss yours in the mix, please do it via Twitter, @hijinksensue and using the hashtag #1stPanel.

Do you want A TON of bonus, extra and alternate comics from the ones that appear on this site?! Do you want to support my ability to make a living from creating weird comics?! Then my Patreon is THE PLACE for you. Every little bit helps and is QUITE appreciated.

Here’s another of my recolored/rewritten FANEURYSM comics. You can see the original here. If you can spot all the differences, you win a punched out and devoured heart! Whose heart? Maybe yours! Are you a whale?! How did you get Internet in the ocean?! Oh, you bit into an intercontinental, underwater data cable? And now you can download the entire Internet straight into your whale brain? And even though you get decent download speeds depending on the tides, the upload is kind of slow? That’s a bummer! Still, pretty good for a whale, right?

The Dark Knight In The Bright Day

2015-06-04-the-dark-knight-in-the-bright-day

This comic might look familiar too you. That’s because a version of it was originally published almost exactly a year ago in my very short lived HijiNKS ENSUE spinoff comic, FANEURYSM. Even though I had moved on with a new direction for HE, I still wanted to make the occasional pop culture strip. I made less than 20 FANEURYSM comics total, but a few of them are some of my absolute favorites of my own work. Since the series started and ended so quickly, I’ve always feared that those strips would be easily forgotten and certainly never get published in a book. So I’ve decided to rework those few favorite FANEURYSMs into Sharksplode strips, by resizing, re-laying out and recoloring them to match the Sharksplode esthetic. I’ll probably toss one in the archive each week until the 4 or 5 I don’t want to lose have been shared.

Have you seen my wife’s geeky jewelry store, Science & Fiction? She’s got necklaces and earrings based on Harry Potter, Doctor Who, Star Wars, The Fibonacci Sequence, DNA, Pac-Man and lot’s more. CHECK. IT. OUT.

I think it’s safe to assume that anyone roughly my age considers Batman: The Animated Series to be the one, true, canonical Batman mythos. Kevin Conroy portrayed Batman/Bruce Wayne better than any other actor who was ever given the role. He was also the first actor to use different voices for Batman and Bruce Wayne. The series introduced the concept of Harvey Dent having an alternate personality BEFORE the accident that created Two Face, and it introduced Harley Quinn. And while we’re on the subject of definitive portrayals of classic DC characters, Mark Hamil’s Joker had a greater impact on me in terms of geek culture than Mark Hamil’s Luke Skywalker did. It was just flawless. It was also the first time I was exposed to the idea that Batman was entirely crazy, and that he was sort of ruining the lives of the kids he took under his care. Furthermore, it was the launchpad for the entire DC animated universe for the next 15 years. With all of that in mind…

COMMENTERS: What versions of classic, constantly reincarnated geek culture icons do you consider to be the definitive ones? Or just talk about how great Batman: TAS was. That’s fine too.
