Lost In Transportation

2014-04-11-lost-in-transportation

[actually posted on 4/16/14] I’m still playing catch up on a week’s worth of comics. This is the second new comic I’ve posted today. You can see the previous one by clicking the back button up in the comic navigation.

100% Convention Truefacts! You can almost always find your way TO the convention in the morning by following the Narutos and find your way HOME (to the hotel) in the evening by following the same, partially undressed/disassembled, significantly more sluggish Narutos. They are nature’s cosplay compasses. They flock… or school.. they do one of those. Anyway, they do it search of food, mates and nesting grounds. If you seek any of those things FOLLOW THE NARUTOS! Do not, I REPEAT, DO NOT follow the adult Pokemons anywhere. ANYWHERE. You do not want to go where they’re going. You do not want to see what they see.

2 HANGOUTS THIS WEEK!

Patreon Patron-ONLY Hangout is tonight [4/16/14] at 9pm central! $10+ Patrons and above can join me on Google Hangout while I draw, answer questions and do other stuff for about an hour, or until we get bored. I will post the link in the Patreon Activity Feed 5-10 minutes before I get started.

The HijiNKS HANGOUT is tomorrow night [4/17/14] at 9pm central. It’s open to all, and will be streaming live on Youtube (I will tweet the link right before we get started). My guests will be David Willis and Angela Melick. Viewers of our ComfyCon panel can expect more of the same. Tweet your discussion topics, questions and drawing challenges to #HijiNKSHangout.

I wrote a blog post about how my Patreon is going and when to expect the rewards I’m working on right now.

UPDATE: You asked for it, so I added a “Chibi Wolverine” desktop to The Vault. I’ve also added “Winter Is Coming” and “Three Wheaton Moon” desktops as well. Just make a donation of any amount, or sign up for a recurring donation subscription and you’ll get access. I’ve also added mobile versions of these desktops HERE.

Long story short: Short mutant tall. I watched the premiere of Wolverine (Marvel Anime version) on G4TV and it just wasn’t for me. I’m not a huge anime fan to begin with, so let that color my opinions however you like. The show was done in my absolute least favorite style of anime. The “lovers exchanging long, silent looks over the ocean while 80’s casio keyboards set to vibraphone play softly in the distance… then everybody fights” style. It wasn’t terrible, but it certainly wasn’t Wolverine. This cat was about 24 years old, tall, slender and pointy in all the wrong places. From chin to Aladdin Sane-esque frock, he was all points. The only thing I really enjoyed about Wolvanime was the completely shoehorned moment reminding the audience”Hey! Wolverine is Canadian!” when the incredibly Japanese Logan is seen standing atop a random Manhattan building drinking a can of clearly labelled “CANADIAN BEER.” Yatta bub!

COMMENTERS: What other unexpected anime characteristics might Logan or any other Japanimated Marvel character have? What sort of situations might they find themselves in? Does Chibi-Charles Xavier have to catch (’em) all the mutants in order to be a true mutant training master?

Dallas Fancy Bastards! I am going to be at STRIP: The Dallas Webcomic Expo this Saturday [August 6th] from 10-5pm. It’s only $5 to get in. Come get a book or a sketch. It’s a very low key show and I’ll probably be doing a fun times panel with the dude from Cyanide and Happiness.

WATCH THIS WITH YOUR EYES! My friends Yuri Lowenthal and Tara Platt are both fantastic voice over actors (Yuri is the voice of Ben 10, Sasuke Uchiha from Naruto, and tons of video game characters, and Tara has voiced characters in Naruto, Final Fantasy XIII, Bleach and dozens of anime series and video games) and now they have stepped out of the booth, in front of the camera to create their own show. Shelf Life is a live action web series about four action figures living on a young boy’s shelf. It’s like Toy Story for those of us that grew up with He-Man and Spider-Man. You can watch the trailer HERE and check out the full series when it premieres later this summer. You can also follow them on the Facing Books.

LAST THING: My AC died last week and living without AC in Texas is not an option. The new unit is costing me $3000. SPOILERS: I don’t have 1 thousand of dollars, let alone 3 of them. If you enjoy my ability to make comics without dying of heat stroke, please consider making a donation, buying something from the store or buying something from Sharksplode.

UPDATE: You wonderful Fancy Bastards have already donated nearly $650 towards the AC repairs. Thank you so very much. Your generosity means so much to me and my family.

Doing Lo-FiJINKS comics for the rest of the week so I can finish up the book WHICH IS DUE SUNDAY AND OMG I AM FREAKING OUT.

I will definitely be watching the new Thundercats animated series, but not (only) because of how far Thunderan cleavage technology has advanced in the last 20 years. Thundercats was my favorite show when it was first airing. I had a multitude of action figured, the Thundertank, and a life size Lion-o suit complete with plastic Sword of Omens and Glove of… Portents? Glove of Mysteries? Power Glove? I don’t remember what it was called, but it was awesome. I think the blend of fantasy and sci-fi really appealed to me. They had spaceships and laser cannons and what not, but there leader was the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi portrayed by Jaguar. I think his name was Jag-o, or Jag-off.

I was, however, quite disturbed as a child by the pilot episode referenced in the comic above. Everyone of the Thundercats was complete naked for the nearly the entire episode. Even the kids. And, seeing as how they are basically animals, that probably wouldn’t have registered as odd if they didn’t make a huge deal about, “OK, now we’re at the planet. We should put some clothes on.” It makes me think nudity wasn’t common on Thudera and they were just weirdos. Like the people that make their kids watch them have sex because “it’s natural.” It’s like they were just putting on clothes because the pizza guy was at the door.

I only saw that episode once when I was young, but the memory of it burned in my brain. I was too young to understand if I was aroused by it, so I think my only real reactions were confusion and fear. I had the same reaction to an episode of The Mysterious Cities of Gold where the main character got naked to play in the river. It was a Japanese import, so I’m sure the creators thought nothing of it. Nudity is something Americans are taught to fear and be ashamed of at a very early age and I think it sticks with us throughout life. The rest of the world (literally ALL OF THE REST OF THE WORLD) doesn’t seem to have that same hang up.

“Sword of Omens, give me sight beyond sight… right into Cheetara’s bedroom. Meow.”

Anyway, enough strolling down repressed childhood memory lane.

COMMENTERS: Are you going to check out the new Thundercats? Did you enjoy the original? Post any Thundercats related thoughts below.

His Abs Are Over 9000

comic-2010-09-08-his-abs-are-over-9000.jpg

This comic is the result of a conversation I had with David Willis during Dallas Animefest. After seeing a veritable “sea of abs” in the anime artwork displayed around us, we decided that this should be the basis of an entire anime universe.

Feel free to use the comments to expand on the narrative above with characters, back stories and other anime tropes that might fit nicely into our new, glistening abdomiverse.

NEWS!

  • HE Book 2 Preorders will begin soon! There will be another Ultimate Fancy Pack that is even more ultimate and fancier than before. Remember that the preorders are what determines of the book ACTUALLY GETS MADE OR NOT, so please consider being one of the early orderers… orderees? Watch this space for details.
  • New Products for the Holidays! I am working on offering some new things this year including greeting cards. If you have something from HE that you would like to see in a greeting card, now is the time to speak up. I am also in the process of moving my comic prints over to Topatoco, which means comic prints will be available with shirts and books and they will be larger. I’ve always thought the comics looks best when they are full resolution (about 14″ wide) and you guys never really get to see them like that. Now you will!
