I have returned from North of The Wall with a bag full of Canadian “money.” While I recharge my batteries, please to enjoy a few of the fancy sketches I did for the Calgarian Fancy Bastards.
Intense thanks to Keith for hosting me this weekend, driving me around Calgary and being a generally awesome dude. Additional thanks to the Blind Ferret crew for being my convention home base and taking care of business (every day/every way). Even further thanks to David and Wil for three straight nights of beer-fueled bro-down hangouts.
Now If you’ll excuse me, I need to go exchange all this ridiculous pastel, plastic currency for something I can actually spend. CANADIAN MONEY TRIVIA: All Canadian bills feature photos of actors who portrayed The Doctor in the classic Doctor Who series’ (Sylvester McCoy is on the $10), except for the $20 which features Hellen Mirren.
COMMENTERS: Speaking of The Sarlacc, which minor Star Wars character (from any movie, book or game) do you hope gets a starring role in the new Disney regime and why? If you say Jaxxon, I’m going to reunify all the little bits of Alderaan just so I can punch it to death again.

This weekend I’ll be at Dallas Animefest with Rob from Explosm. We’ll be in the dealer room, terrified of glomping cat-girls and Sailor Bubbas alike. I’ll have both HE Books, Prints, sketch cards, “Grammar Dalek” Shirts and “The Doctor Is In” shirts.
This was my first Toronto Fan Expo, but my second time in Toronto. Once again, I found the city and it’s comic-loving citizens to be as kind as pleasant as the Canadian Constitution requires them to be under penalty of mild reprimand. I only had one goal for my weekend in Toronto, which was to dine once again at Korean Grill House. This is a restaurant where you are given a table that is on fire, tray after tray of raw meat, some tongs and ZERO instructions, guidance or supervision of any sort. It’s $10 all you can (m)eat, and I’m pretty sure it’s my favorite place in the world. I wondered if I was hyping it up to my friends too much, but after seeing them marvel at the quantity and quality of meats, the looks of childlike wonder at the thought of throwing said meats into a flaming grill that was built into the table, and their amazement as we elected to reward ourselves for consuming our own weights in meat with celebratory milkshakes, I knew that I was significantly UNDERhyping the fantastical nature of this (m)eatery. If you are visiting Toronto, there is a KGH on Bloor and another on Queens. The service is terrible, the staff is incredibly uninterested in bringing you more lukewarm soda, and the bathroom was unusable, so please take all of that into consideration when I STILL DEMAND that it is my favorite place to eat.
I left the con a day early so I could get home in time to accompany my daughter to her first day of kindergarten. Delta lied to me and told me even though my flight from Buffalo to NYC was late I would definitely still make my connection to DFW. I was still on the first plane when my connecting flight home took off. Even if every plane had been on time, the flights were scheduled 27 minutes apart. Given the 15-20 minutes it takes to de-board the first plane, the time it would take to get to the other terminal (which was a “bus ride” away according to my flight attendent) and the time to board the following flight there was essentially no way possible for this connection to be made. Delta sold me an impossible flight, lied to me about my chances of making it home, then when presented with a plane load of passengers that missed their connections the Delta agents elected to offer us NOTHING as compensation. No flights into TX (for me at least), no flights on other airlines that might have gotten us to our destinations, no hotel and no travel vouchers.
The dead-eyed, policy spewing assfaces I spoke to (Shout outs to Kentun and Chris the PO at Delta in LaGuardia!) made it clear that if I had been the only one affected I would have been taken care of, but since their error screwed 10-15 people NO ONE would be given any sort of consideration. “What would you have me do? Give ALL THESE PEOPLE a hotel?” Oh, the people your company lied to, bilked and stranded hundreds if not thousands of miles from home? Yes, I would. That would be doing the right thing. Delta had an opportunity to make me a customer for life that night. Instead they made me miss my little girl’s first day of school, lose hundreds of dollars by skipping a day of the convention for no reason, and through their arrogance and lack of compassion they lost a customer (who spends nearly $5000 a year on air travel) FOREVER.
COMMENTERS: Please feel free to share your stories about Toronto, Fan Expo, Korean BBQ, or air trave nightmares.

TCAF was so much fun. Thank you Toronto! Getting on a plane now. I’ll post another round of sketches tomorrow and do some photo comics after that. Watch out for moose-vipers. ~Joel “The Doctor Is In” shirt based off the “You’re The Last of The Time Lords, Charlie Brown” comic is here!]]>

Saturday:
Sunday
Monday I was traveling the entire day. I don’t really understand how you can get on a plane in the morning for a 4 hour flight, yet not arrive at your destination until late that evening. Times zones? More like time vortexes. Even MORE like time bullshit.
Regardless of my disdain for EVERY SINGLE ASPECT of air travel (did I mention they “shredded my suitcase?) I really did leave Seattle a changed man. It was just an incredible and eye opening weekend. Instead of trying to shoehorn myself into situations or groups of “cool kids” where I am less than welcomed (which is what it feels like I was doing for all of 2010… huge mistake), I surrounded myself with people I admire (and who seem to genuinely enjoy my company) and wonderful, fantastic things just kept happening over and over. This was a really big deal for me. It took me more than a year and over a dozen cons to realize that I should stop trying so hard to be friends with everyone and work on just being myself and letting others decide of they are interested in what I have to offer. You can’t force a friendship, no matter how bad you want it.
I am also proud of myself for not being quite so up tight and allowing myself to have more fun that I usually do. These are my lessons for 2011: Worry, fret, and anxiety are useless. If you can’t control/affect it, then be at peace with it. Everyone isn’t going to like you. Be kind, make an effort then move on. Find your friends, and you will find your home. Thank you, Seattle. I left my extra iPhone battery pack somewhere in you. Consider it a gift.

Alternate Title: “Horrible Fears A Who”
This comic started as a commission for a reader named Justin who I met at Dallas Animefest 2010. His idea was for a “Doctor vs. Doctor” duel with The Good Doctor triumphing over the horrible doctor. I finished the commission [which you can see HERE] and decided to take just the inks from that piece and rework it into a full color comic-type situation. I really had fun making this one and I hope you enjoy it. If so, thank Fancy Bastard Justin for the idea and the title. I also want to mention that I used a photo called “Dark Alleyway” from James Wong on Deviant Art as the basis for the background.
If you would like a print of this comic to hang on your wall or cube or shark tank or whatever, click the “Buy A Print” button beneath the image.
EWOK STARE SHIRTS [based on THIS comic] are IN THE STORE!

COMMENTERS: Given the match up presented above, who would win (no pun intended) and why?

Inspired by Tindomiel and the other FB’s that created THIS AMAZINGLY AWESOME VIDEO (read the story and watch it NOW!), I’ve decided the HE crew should formally apply to The Evil League of Evil. Here’s hoping we’ve made the Bad Horse gleeful.
Feel free to use the comments to fill in the 3 arch villains backstories, powers, sidekicks, nemesis… nemesies… you get the idea.
]]>I’d noticed some nefarious plans taking shape on this thread in the Fancy Bastard Forum, but it wasn’t until tonight that I realized plot had come to fruition and it was already too late for us all.
I present to you newest applicant to the Evil League of Evil, THE RECLUSE!
FB’s will recognize the Feisty Fiddling Recluse as Tindomiel from the forum and comments. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that everyone else in the video was a Fancy Bastard:
Corporal Punishment, founding member of the hero team Shine Junkies – Sean
Nude Knight, former member of Shine Junkies – Dramthevirgin
Kid Kosmic, former member of Shine Junkies – Eddie
Null, former employer of the Recluse – Sean (again)
Oscar the dachshund – himself
Additional HE nods are peppered through out the video (a fallen hero named “Rainbow Grizzly” getting the “Godspeed, You Fancy Bastard” salute, the desktop on The Recluse’s PC and the Super Villain team name “The Shine Junkies” which is an anagram for… something)
So, please support your fellow Evil FB’s and watch the video, rate it, leave positive comments, link to it and send it to your friends. The winners, chosen by Bad Horse himself, will appear in the extras on the Doctor Horrible DVD.
Regarding Tindomiel‘s performance, I am THOROUGHLY impressed to say the least. She exhibits dangerous levels of musical baddassery which is my favorite kind of badassery. Plus a chance for anything HE related to appear on a Dr. Horrible DVD is super awesome bonus tits. Regardless of the outcome, I am very proud of you guys. We are all evil winners!
]]>The Podcast Vidcast Simulcast Castcast will be tonight with Josh and Eli, starting between 8 and 9pm central. Check Twitter for exact times.
Comic-Con ’08 is over and the webs are returning to normal. I wasn’t able to attend (much less exhibit), but it’s totally cool because everywhere I turned on the interblogs there was some other web cartoonist Tweeting, blogging, vlogging or skrogling how freaking awesome it was. So… it was like I was there… which is totally just as cool [weeps].
(Baby steps, Joel, baby steps)
This week, each HE comic will be devoted to one “revelation” made at this years San Diego International Comic-Con. I think today’s comic speaks for itself in that “more Firefly” would be a good and welcomed thing, but would not be possible on the web unless it were a flash cartoon, and Captain Mal were an email answering luchadore. (I seriously feel like I’ve written that last sentence on this site before)
Sure, people are speculating that the success of “Dr. Horrible” could open new possibilities for our beloved space whores, phychic sister-weapons and… oh right, they killed Wash, but unless Firefly could get MAJOR sponsorship (and I’m talking Serenity would have to be a modified Ford F-150) I don’t see how the venture could be financially successful… today. I say that because the idea of shows being produced SPECIFICALLY for the web can only be a few years off. Tivo made “channels” and “times slots” obsolete and, in turn, the internet is making “networks” and “ratings” obsolete.
I know there have already been a few pseudo-dramas produced exclusively for MySpace and such, but I don’t consider that entertainment, therefor it doesn’t factor into this equation. NBC, ABC and F/X are experimenting with “webisodes” during the off season, but this doesn’t interest me either. I don’t want “throw away” content featuring the B-cast members of my favorite shows.
One of the major networks or film studios is going to have to take a leap of faith and produce a real series with real actors and real writers exclusively for the web. NBC/Universal is my pick, seeing as they know how to make decent comedies and sci-fi type series, and Hulu is the perfect distribution model. Get on it, jerks. I’m sick of having to pay for 350 satellite channels when i only watch 7. TV shows “A La Motherfucking Carte” is where it’s at.

I still haven’t seen the first episode of “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog.” The fact that there exists Whedon songs in the universe that aren’t already stuck in my head fills me with unspeakable sadness. You can still get it on iTunes, but I’m going to wait and watch it on the official site to get the full “DHSAB” experience.

Despite the fact that we know almost nothing about Joss Whedon’s internet musical (they have those now?), “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-a-long Blog,” it now has it’s own fan blog. That may be a little “putting the fan-blorg before the actual blorg” but that’s how the kids roll these days. Ideas that Whedon hasn’t even had yet already have fan forums, erotic fan-fic, crossover slash with “Veronica Mars” and “Save Joss’s Future Idea from Cancellation!” petitions.
His followers (of which I certainly am one) are quite devoted. I can only assume that all 7 season’s of “Buffy” were laden with subliminal messages that will allow Joss to activate us in his time of need. Look out world. If a zombie-like hoard of kids with ironic tee shirts and even more ironic haircuts come lumbering at you, GET OUT OF THEY WAY! It could only mean Joss Whedon is in trouble and rest assured they will kill you to get to him. They might eat you. Depends on what kind of suggestion he implanted.
So anyway, say we (the Whedon Zombie Hoard) are called and we march to his rescue from… an IRS audit or something. Does he say the secret Mandarin Chinese word and deactivate us like so much River Tam, or does he keep as his personal militia of devout killing machines? I, for one, would gladly live out my days as one of his elite death squad. Why do I assume Whedon has so many enemies?
Based on Joel’s wardrobe and Denise’s comment, what guilty pleasures do you indulge in. Mine is typically watching TV shows I hate until they are cancelled. It’s like once I start something I have to see it through to the end despite loathing ever god forsaken minute of it. Past and current offenders include “Dawson’s Creek”(i know), “Enterprise,” and “Smallville.” I’ve come clean. What about you?
UPDATE: Whedon filmed in this guy’s personal super villain lair! He was a home owner from the show “Monster House” that had his home transformed into an evil dungeon. Everything about this story is the coolest thing I’ve ever heard.

Joss is writing and producing an internet musical called “Dr. Horrible’s Sing-A-Long Blog.” It will star Captain Tight Pants (Nathon Fillion) as Captain Hammer, and Felicia Day (former slayerette and current “The Guild” star).
Whedon, Captain, Muscial, Blog… these are all words that I like. Put them together in one concept and my geek asplode.
Here’s the rest of the whatever:
