Writing One’s Wrongs

Today is the 2 year anniversary of “The Experiment.announced it about a week after losing my last “real job” and have been professionally unemployed for the last 24 months. If you were to ask how I’ve made it this long I would hardly be able to supply an answer. I really don’t know. All I do know is that whatever weird little miracle I have accomplished is almost entirely due to the Fancy Bastards that have supported me through this ridiculous nonsense of an amazing career.

If you are fairly new to HE and The Experiment and would like to show your support, please consider getting a book or shirt in the store or making a donation.

This anniversary seems like it should be special, but I know today is no different than any other day in the last 2 years. I have to make comics, answer emails and figure out how to sell some stuff so I can do it all again tomorrow. That’s the prize actually. The fact that I’m not working towards an impossible goal, but rather getting to live each day inside the impossibility.

There’s so much I want to do with HijiNKS ENSUE. So many half started projects, and aborted attempts at creativity. I feel like I owe it to you all for supporting me for this long to give you as much potential enjoyment as possible but there are only so many hours in the week and I am [sadly] still just one guy. I’ve made podcasts, and videos and various other distractions, but I don’t want to lose sight of the reason you’re reading this: the comic.

That’s why, starting next week, I am going to produce HijiNKS ENSUE 4 times a week. Ideally it would be Mon-Thurs but you and I both know I am terrible at keeping a regular schedule. Inspiration hits me at odd times and I have always been a creature of procrastination. Still, I want to give more to those of you that have given me so much. So how about an extra 30-45 seconds of LOL’s in a given week? Sounds like a fair deal to me.

Thanks again for giving me the life I’ve always dreamed of.

~Joel

  1. I read a lot of webcomics but yours has always been my favorite. If not for you, actually, I would never have found a lot of the other webcomics I read. Also, when you make current event posts, and add links to them, I always get to read more and learn more about important current geek issues (I'm a lazy geek).

I totally owe you, not the other way 'round.

  2. Wouldn't 2 years = 24 months?

By the way, I can't believe you've been doing 'The Experiment' for that long. It seems like just yesterday you announced it. I doubted you'd make it, but I'm pleased beyond measure that you have.

    Here's to another 2 years

  3. I laugh my arse off at this web-comic, I really do. I laugh so hard it gives me a headache. I save my favorites and go through and laugh again and again and again. Then I link them on IMDb and Facebook so that others might share in the joy (I hope that's ok!).

Keep up the great work Joel! I'll be wearing your Team Edward t-shirt when I meet BSG people at Comic-Con!

  4. Wow! Congratulations, Joel! I must admit, I was a bit wary of how it would work when you started The Experiment. It was a fool's hope, but I still held out for the best for you. So it brings me loads of joy to know that you have been able to do it, despite the odds.

I'm sorry I don't comment on all the strips that come out, but I make for damned sure that I at least read each and every one and never fail to be entertained by them.

Also, while I'm pleased at the announcement, I want you to know that I would visit the site even if you had to scale back updating to only once a week. I'm sure the other Fancy Bastards would agree.

    Thanks, Joel. For everything.

  5. "Battletoad What Now?" Awesome!

That phrase alone makes up for 90% of that movie; the other 10% would be if they gave the people that green-lit "Battletoad" a brainema from a qualified hobo-ologist.

  6. Sweet, TY Joel, more is good, I hope to send a donation/ buy stuff soon, gots to get caught up on my bills, so until then I'll just try to pimp the site.

  7. So does Pete keep a different dead rat in each separate coat he uses, or is there a single dead rat that gets transferred as he changes jobs? The answer to this is, of course, vital to future of humankind.

    • For those who think he is joking, let me tell you about a possible far future in which this question goes unanswered: Man kinds has broken in two factions, both based off the sacred images. one faction, the uniratians, believe there is but one Rat, and in his sneaky greatness, he observed all that transpired and whispered nightly in the ear of Joel the Prophet, telling brilliant ideas. on the other end are the utiliratians, who believe it was multiple rats, and that rather, Boxcar Pete (may he be praised), due to his lack of literacy, would sneak into the Watson home, and it was he, not a rat, who whispered the brilliance. In their ratcentric beliefs, the uniratians while create a device which will wipe humanity, and most higher mammals, from existence, leave the universe to be run by the rats. Unfortunately, in our attempts to stop global warming, we will have caused cataclysmic climate change that brings about an ice age greater than all previous, freezing the rats, and all other life on the planet. Only one man can stop this cataclysm: Joel the Prophet. Let us pray he responds in time.

  8. Joel, you are awesomesauce. It's 3AM and my brainmeat can't word right now, but seriously you are. And believe me I know about procrastination, I'm doing it right now, and for drawing no less. Drawing on a schedule is hard. So I sympathize, and seriously fucking admire you for challenging yourself to produce more.

  9. No sir. THANK YOU.

Your experiment – as I have said to you at least once via email – is an inspiration to me, not just edutainment. Every day you get to do what you love – and support your family – is a day I get to look at and say IT CAN BE DONE.

Watching you succeed has been awesome. Not only do you entertain, but you give me hope.

An extra day of comic? Just extra bacon-gravy on top.

And that was all too sappy so I will end with BACONLOLCATTEAMEDWARDFANCYBASTARDMUSICALUNICORNWIZARDPRIDE

  10. Two years to be self-supporting through a webcomic is an amazing achievement. Big huge congratulations, and good luck with the increased updates.

  11. What I never understood was, what in the hell was powering the flight simulators that taught the post-humans how to fly military aircraft? Or where they found fuel for those jets that hadn't destabilized and turned to grease? Or like, you know, all the practical shit?

  12. Congrats on the anniversary Joel! And thank you for giving me something to laugh out loud at so very often. And also for having the Dollhouse/Sarah Connor dilemma strip that got you linked at Whedonesque – that's how I found you.

Here's to livin' the dream, you Fancy Bastard!

  13. I always thought that Battlefield Earth was an ok movie.

Besides, if you compare it to Starship Troopers 2, it's godlike…
(Of course, that's not saying much…)
