The Boy Who Cried Happy Ending

Mine and Wil’s T-Shirt site, Sharksplode, is involved in the Reddit T-Shirt Exchange this year, and to get these started we’re launching a brand new shirt.

The Reddit “Reddshirt“… shirt!

In the last comic, I invented the concept of coffee waffles or “coffles.” Shut up forever if someone has already come up with that before, because I INVENTED IT. IN INVENTED IT WITH MY BRAIN!

My challenge to you is to come up with a real recipe for coffles and share it with the Fancy Bastards in the comments of this comic or on the FB Facebook group.

COMMENTERS: Have you ever created, or been treated to a dish with an unexpected SECRET INGREDIENT? A reader from Seattle sent me a chocolate bar with cayenne pepper. It seemed super wrong, but it was super duper right.

ANOTHER THING: On Joco Cruise Crazy 3, I led a panel called “The Quitting Panel: Keep Calm And Quit Your Job,” where a group of creatives from the worlds of animation, music, programming, cartooning, and game design told stories and answered audience questions about how they quit their day jobs to pursue their passion for a living.

I created a Youtube playlist of the uploaded videos uploaded by Sea Monkey Angela. The whole thing is an hour long and I think we threw out some good information about the realities of “living the dream.” This is a must watch for anyone interested in The Experiment.

  1. FB @LyssaPearl <a href="http://(https://twitter.com/LyssaPearl)” target=”_blank”>(https://twitter.com/LyssaPearl) is already perfecting her recipe (though her lack of a waffle iron forced her to make "coffancakes"), which uses Kahlua to get the java flavor in the batter. This is fancy clever thinking, which is something I like to see. It also involves putting booze-type things in dessert breakfast foods which is another thing I like.

  2. I made a fried langostino po' boy with avocado, tahini, baba ghanoush and parmesan last night. Does that count?

Rarely a day goes by that I don't cook or eat something "wrong." I've been doing the cayenne chocolate thing since long before that movie where Edward Scissorhands fights Doc Ock over whether or not the Chocolate Witches were wrong to put a chocolate spell on M and Trinity.

  3. Coffles don't seem like they would be that hard. However, I think coffee syrup would be more efficatious. All you would have to do is make coffee at the strength you like it, then put it in a saucepan with about 1/2 cup of sugar for every cup of coffee. Bring it to a boil, then add 1/2tblsp corn syrup. Then let it boil till it is syrup consistency. Then you can have it any time you want, with anything.

  4. I've always liked weird sweet & salty combos. For example, I've been putting strawberry jam on my cheese sandwiches since forever (pro tip: try it with Nutella – if you think you're hard enough). Once we had a chocolate fountain at a New Year's Eve party, and everyone started dipping salty snacks in it when we ran out of fruit. Pretzels and pretzel sticks work INCREDIBLY well. Crunchy-coated paprika-spiced peanuts, not so much.

Oh, and I just sent my Mom wasabi chocolate for her birthday. She loves chili/cayenne chocolate, so I upped the ante… I have yet to hear from her.

  5. Some of my friends have done some pretty sneaky things with tofu, but I'm not sure if that really counts. Except for that time with the tofu-bacon. That wasn't sneaky or good, just an abomination.

Over on Instructables, I have seen some basic coffee-added-to-waffles recipes before:
    http://www.instructables.com/id/Waffles-with-a-Hi

I have no idea how good it is, as I just plain don't appreciate coffee. I simply use it as a tool.

  6. My sister and brother-in-law got my dad a bottle of Habanero Maple Syrup for Christmas. It has yet to find its way onto waffles or pancakes (that I know of), but it's become a key ingredient in many, many things. Top is mixing copious amounts of it into ketchup before consuming a hot dog (or anything else if hot dogs weren't about the only thing made at home that I still used ketchup for…)

    • I can think of a number of things I might do with habanero maple syrup, but I have to admit mixing it into catsup and putting it on a hot dog is not really something I would have thought of. I would probably use it to baste grilled chicken or something. It would also be good on bacon or sausage. I think I will have to go look for some habanero maple syrup now. Mmmmmm.

  7. Ahem.
Thank you for posting the JCCC3 Quitting Panel videos. It's nice to see a group of creators voluntarily addressing the one question I obsessively ask every artist I run into.
I… I can't actually watch it right now, because I have to go to my %@(*#*&^ day job. Which is actually a night job. But yeah, thank you.

    • I really hope you get something out of it. No reason to do all this weird, amazing stuff if you can't share the knowledge you gain with others.

  8. Woo! Thanks for the inspiration, Joel. I was thinking all day how to incorporate coffee into the batter, and when I thought about Kahlua it was an immediate "I NEED TO EAT THIS NOW" kinda deal.

So worth it! It was really, really good. The side of bacon was imperative, of course.

  9. I put broccoli and cauliflower in stew – people sometimes look at me oddly for it, I don't see anything weird about it myself. (Ideally, my stew contains meat, broccoli, cauliflower, potatoes, carrots, and onion. I often have to leave out the broccoli and cauliflower, because my brother won't touch the stuff.)

I also just like broccoli and cauliflower, that one brother is the only person I've ever cooked for or eaten with to *not* like broccoli or cauliflower.

  10. COFFLES
    1-1/3c all-purpose flour
    4tsp baking powder
    1/2tsp salt
    4tbsp sugar

    2 large eggs, separated
    1/2c melted butter
    1c brewed coffee
    3/4c whole milk
    2tsp vanilla

    1. Blend dry ingredients
    2. Beat egg whites until stiff peaks form
    3. Blend dry ingredients w/ milk, coffee, butter, vanilla, and egg yolks
    4. Fold egg whites into batter
    5. Bake your delicious coffles – about 1/3c to 1/2c batter per coffle.

I tried these today, and they go very well with clotted cream. 🙂

  11. I put pumpkin seed butter in my chocolate mug cake. It's actually a chocolate mug soufflé, because it has no flour and the cake-y consistency comes from the egg it contains, but the pumpkin seed butter gives it a firmer texture and helps it rise more in the microwave. For some reason it does that better than any other nut butters I've tried.

    If you're curious:

    3 Tbsp. sugar
    2 Tbsp. cocoa
    1 egg

    OPTIONAL
    vanilla
small amount of nut butter or peanut butter or Nutella
    spoonful of yogurt
any other flavour items you like, such as dried cranberries, orange rind, walnuts, coconut, M&Ms, whatever floats your boat

Mix ingredients together in a mug. Microwave for 1 minute for basic recipe, up to 1:20 if you've added a bunch of other stuff. Eat with a spoon.

  12. Also, as far as Secret Ingredient Soup goes, I'm pretty fond of thyme in my lemon cakes. I'm not sure if that counts or not…

  13. Not sure if this counts, but back in middle school a friend of mine introduced me to bologna and peanut butter. It sounded awful, but it was great. I should have realized peanut butter goes with everything. Still occasionally eat em to this day.

  14. Just add a few tbl spoons of your favorite bean finely ground after mixing your favorite waffle recipie. Coffee flavor, all the caffeine less work.
