OK… But I Could Set The Internet On Fire

[reddit-me]Hello, IE6. Whaaaat’s happening?
We have sort of a problem here.
Yeeeah. You apparently stopped rendering webpages correctly in 2001.
Mmm yeah. Ya see we’re rendering valid html correctly from now on… did you SEE the memo?
If you could just do that from now on that would be great.
And I’ll make sure you get another copy of that memo.

  1. I can't say I'm sad to see IE6 on its way out… But it won't just magically disappear because YouTube doesn't support it anymore. There are tons of folks stuck on Win2k who can't upgrade… And plenty of folks in corporate environments that can't upgrade because IE6 is the only thing that runs their webapps correctly.

    • Well, those folks who are running Win2K or need IE6 for their intranet can just install Firefox, and keep using IE6 when they need to, can't they? I mean sure, it's a real shame that these people can't install IE7 or IE8… but Microsoft kinda painted themselves into that corner, right?

  3. Office Space! I love that movie. Also Idiocracy… basically anything Mike Judge has written.

    That last panel is awesome.

  4. I hate IE so much. The Navy's hiring website requires IE, or at least that's what they told me. Only version of IE I could find for the Mac? IE6. Guess which website doesn't show up in IE6?

  5. Consider it a form of IT stimulus (trust me, we really need one), if more and more site won't work with IE6 than there will be more pressure for companies (and really it is much more likely to be government agencies) to spend a few $K to hire some temps to run around and do the upgrades.

  6. Just updated my wife's laptop to IE8 from IE6 a few days ago; she held out as long as she could. The speed, tabs and security is fine, but the GUI pisses her off no end. To get the same functionality she's used to, she has to have at least 3 toolbars up there (she likes Google toolbar, but you can't remove the IE toolbar without registry hacks). Not a Firefox fan before, but she may become one now.

  7. People still use IE?

Seriously, though, that's good news. The fewer big sites that support IE6, the easier it is for small-medium size sites to get away with not supporting it also.

I also want to mirror above comments by saying the Firefox works beautifully on Win2K.

  8. Hehe, good for Youtube.

For my own framework i also dropped support for IE6 ( and IE 7 ). Only valid html browsers from now on. People need to learn to upgrade! Its so sad, how much time developers need to keep placing in fixing IE 6 bugs, and other rendering problems, to make there site look good.

Now, IE8, thats a whole different mater, and way better ( and that gets supported ).

Not being able to upgrade IE6 is no excuse at all… You have Firefox, Opera, Google Chrome … Plenty off browsers ( even Safari )…

  9. My local library still uses IE6. I have my own laptop but I went in and showed them Youtube and told them they need to upgrade, especially as that's what most people in my neighbourhood who don't have computers use it for. I'm very thankful this has happened so they can be finally forced to upgrade it.

  10. Hmm. First Matrix, then Office Space. Make a third one and we'll have a proper Explorer-trilogy.

Much love for the red stapler there, your attention to detail always makes me happy.

  11. Color me a total dunce, but I've never much figured out the BrowserWars. It's all software that you can get for free, without a registration. Why should companies give a rat's ass which one I use? Do they get a secret royalty check from InterNIC for every IP I ping from whichever browser I'm swinging around at the moment?
