The Darkseid Of The Fox

[HOLIDAY SHPPING DEADLINES!!! I’ll be announcing these soon, but if you want a book (especially an Artist Edition) you should probably ORDER IT like right now]

This origin story may sound familiar, and it may completely contradict the previous origin story for the Evil Fox Executive but hey, whatevs.

So Fox has decided to shelve Dollhouse for November sweeps, and air it 2 eps at a time when it returns in December. Sounds like they are blowing through their already canned episodes and fulfilling a contractual obligation with Mutant Enemy at the same time. A few days ago I would have said, “Meh, go for it. The show just isn’t resonating with its intended audience. The stories range from mildly intriguing to flat out boring (ie “Not Without My Baby” starring Echo Dushku).” Then (just like last season with 1.12″Omega”) they threw a curve ball and showed what was probably the 3rd best episode of the series so far, 2.4 “Belonging”.

I’ve been saying since the beginning that this show sould be Dollhouse: The Adventures of  Victor and Sierra. Last week’s ep was irrefutable proof to this point. Sierra’s origin story was fucking intense. Just brutal. There was character development, depth, drama and suspense coming out the yang. And she and Victor have such fantastic chemistry even in their blank doll states. I wonder how much of this improvement had to do with Jonathan “Space Beard” Frakes being in the director’s chair? Maybe this season can end with Echo being brutally murdered by Alpha then Victor and Sierra can take over for the fictional 3rd season that will only air in my fevered dreams.

There are 3 contests that you can enter to win a copy of Borderlands (PC) or Ghostbusters (360), but you have to ACT QUICKLY.

Thanks to everyone that came to see me in Austin, TX this past weekend. The Ka-Baam! shows were a fantastic experience and I hope to be involved next year as well. You can see the comic book covers I created for the improvisers to… improv off of HERE and HERE. The reader meetup after the Friday night show was a blast as well. It’s weird to think that I have internet-friends in pretty much every major city in America. The book signing at Rogue’s Gallery in Round Rock was fun too. Randy and the staff were extremely nice and we had a some very stimulating geek conversation. If you are in the Austin area, you should give them a look see.

I’ll be posting a ton of pics from the whole weekend on Flickr soon.

Black As Pitch Meeting

In all fairness to Fox, their proposed space western sounds more like a Jonah Hex ripoff than a Firefly/Serenity wannabe. Credit where credit is due, I suppose.hijinks-ensue-godspeed-you-fancy-bastard-book-300x300

I love writing for the Evil Fox Exec. Despite appearing only a handful of times, I have his entire back story fleshed out in my head. He’s a troubled man that wrestles with the moral implications of his many unfathomable sins, while simultaneously reveling in his god-like powers. He wasn’t born this way. He was made into a monster. He’s a walking study in nature vs. nurture. He started at Fox in a lowly, but creative position. The highers ups noticed his go-getter attitude and began molding him to their sinister will. With each promotion came more money, more power and more dubious job duties. At first he was only asked to cancel shows that had already had several seasons, good promotion and still suffered from low ratings. He thought of it as mercy killing. Then he was told to create shows that would garner a small but devoted fanbase JUST so they could be canceled and replaced with reality-dance contests. Fox’s hate-engine is fueled by sadness and he was loading it’s doom-furnace one shovel full at a time.

OK, he’s basically Lindsey McDonald to Fox‘s Wolfram and Hart, but I still enjoy the tiny, evil space in my head the EFE occupies. Expect to see more of him in the future.

The Old Bait And Switch

[NEW TO HE? Check out The Experiment, The Vault and The Store]

I’ve got a really simple solution for anyone upset that Fox may bring Futurama back without Billy West, Katey Segal, John DiMaggio, Tres MacNeille, Phil LaMarr, Maurice LeMarche, Lauren Tom and David Herman.

Just don’t watch it.

Fuck it. Pretend the show was never renewed and go back to however you felt a few months ago before they announced Futurama’s 2nd resurrection. Fox is a tricky nemesis. They lull you into a false sense of confidence by renewing Dollhouse, then BAM! They’ve smashed you in the nuts with a 40 lb. paving stone and fired all the Futurama voice actors.

There’s no point in my enumerating all the ways in which this decision reaches heretofore unknown depths of douchebaggedness and cockery. It’s obvious that this unFuturama will be an utter abortion of entertainment without the original voice cast. Can you imagine how embarrassing the show will be when Fry or Bender open their mouths to deliver a line and the sound of some pathetic imposter comes out?

Wait a second. This worked before, didn’t it? When John K. was fired from Ren and Stimpy! They found a voice actor to take over the part of Ren and the difference was hardly noticeable. Some would say the replacement was better than the original. Who was that? Can they get him? OH RIGHT! It was Billy West. Well eff that plan, I guess. The real problem is that Futurama had the uncanny fortune of featuring ALL OF THE BEST VOICE ACTORS IN HOLLWOOD. They are truly irreplaceable. Futurama is still quite canceled, dead and buried as far as I’m concerned. [unless this is all a publicity stunt]

SciFi’s Choice

[digg-reddit-me]This comic has been making the interrounds so I though I would say “Hi” to all the new visitors.

If you liked this comic, you can check out more HE comics about: TV, Dollhouse, Terminator: TSCC, SciFi, Joss Whedon, Battlestar Galactica or just browse the archive.

Things are a little crazy right now while I am finishing up a long term commission project (which is due in the morning), so in light of a proper post, I give you these links:

Commenters: So what do you think of the decision to kill one promising but low rated SciFi show, only to save another that seemed to be an even longer shot for renewel?

Mixing Metaphors

Today’s HijiNKS Ensue brought to you buy Cmd+C/Cmd+V Comics.

[having dinner with the family then posting more… but the thing you need to understand is that Alan Tudyk KICKED AMAZING SHINY AMOUNTS OF ASS in his guest roll on “Dollhouse,” thus ensuring my undying love for the series and it’s emanent demise.]

And just like bacon bits, Alan Tudyk somehow enhances the performances (flavors) of all those around him while simultaneously stealing the show. I don’t want to spoil the most recent episode of “Dollhouse” for those that haven’t seen it yet, but I will say that Joss couldn’t have picked a better actor (than Alan) for the part.

Not only is Tudyk an amazing TV actor, but he is also a fantastic song and dance man. When I saw “Spamalot” on Broadway, I was a little pissed that Hank Azaria was absent from the cast. That is until I learned that his replacement was my favorite Hawaiian shirt wearing space pilot. WashAlan took over the roll of Lancelot (who liked to dance a lot) and (all together now) HE STOLE THE EFFING SHOW.

We met him briefly after the show and I managed to utter something like, “…uhhhh….we….brown coat…. love….[throw up].” Upon hearing the “B” word his face changed from the “Im smiling because people are taking lots of pictures of my head” smile to a more somber and heartfelt visage that said, “you and I have both experienced love and loss. We are kindred souls, forever bound in a brotherhood of space piracy and plastic dinosaurs. Would you like to come to my house and play Apples To Apples?”  He said all of that with a look, but his mouth said something like “oh, hey man. thanks.” Also he went to high school like 15 miles from here, so that practically makes us BFF’s.

Tudyk’s appearance on “Dollhouse” was important for two reasons. A) He just kicked so much ass, and B) It signified the show finally getting to the meat of it’s primary story arch. The same meat that was missing entirely from the first 5 episodes. NOW this is a show that I really want to see play out… also, it’s totally cancelled. [even though Dushku says it’s not cancelled “yet”]
