An Heroic Spirit

A NEW PODCAST SAY WHAAAAT?! I am doing a new mini-podcast called the LoFijiNKS Podcast where I just talk for 30 min or so about whatever was on TV or anything else I feel like sharing. I hope to do it a few times a week. You can listen HERE, subscribe HERE, or iTunes subscribe HERE.

STORE NEWS: The “Riker?” Shirt will be available for a limited time (until Feb 20th) and 5 other HE shirts are being retired for the foreseeable future and are on sale now for $18. More info in THIS BLOG POST.

In cocktail form “Sylar Sauce” is called “The Haitian,” since it makes you forget the last few months after you drink it.

HEROES DRINKING GAME:
-Drink every time someone is given additional powers to get the writer’s out of a corner.
-Drink every time a major plot line is completely abandoned (Claire’s a lesbian right?)
-Drink every time a character’s consistently evil past is ignored and someone gives them another chance to screw them over.
-Drink every time a Hero could have solved a problem by ACTUALLY USING THEIR SUPER POWERS but chose not to.
-Drink every time Hiro’s brain tumor is cured by a dream (so far this has only happened once).
-Drink every time you get fucking sick of reading ALL of Hiro and Ando’s dialog in subtitles WE TOTALLY GET IT, THEY’RE JAPANESE!!!
-Drink every time Claire seems to forget that her blood cures death in others, so it really doesn’t matter if anyone she cares about dies.
-Drink every time you have no idea who Noah works for any more.
-Drink every time it’s obvious the FX budget has run out and they show a “power” off screen or with simple lighting effects.
-Drink every time a characters actions completely betray any previous character development (WARNING: This is guaranteed to kill you).
Please feel free to add your own “Heroes Drinking Game” rules, or alternate names and side effects for “Sylar Sauce.”

  1. Ooo, how about "Drink every time Mohinder almost dooms the world?' Or "Drink every time Mohinder acts self-righteous?" Or, better yet, "Drink every time Mohinder almost dooms the world and *then* acts self-righteous?"

  2. ahh… thank god that two episodes in to the third season i deleted that show from the dvr to free it up for more enjoyable t.v. Think about how much happier we'd all be if Fox had recieved that show instead of nbc.

    • neah, it would have been canceled after the first season, which was actually nice, and then we would be complaining that fox destroyed another show that had potential. This way we get to see how wrong we would have been thinking that.

  3. I had no idea it was finally over until tonight when I read this comic… I remember a time, way, way back in 2006 when Heroes actually made SOME sense… when they didn't explain much, but you as the viewer assumed they would slowly start revealing clues that could be pieced together into a logical and enjoyable storyline.

We had way too much faith in those writers.

  4. It was very sad to see Sylar having a 70s Batman moment, very, very sad, almost worst than all that "wow that was the greatest fight ever, so sorry you guys couldn't watch it" from the last season finale.
I hope this really is the series ending, because I don't want to start hating Quinto, or feeling more sorry about him. They should make an epilogue where Sylar goes bad again, cracks everybody's head open, and ends up the last and only superpowered individual, then rules over mankind for thousands of years until finally realizing his Golden Path… no wait… actually, coming to think about it he could be an excellent Paul Muad'Dib.

  5. I remember first seeing the commercials for the series and being so excited. Then i watched it, whispered what the f***, then turning the channel to watch futurama.

  6. Drink every time you get so fed up with the show you quit watching, only to start again out of a sense of morbid curiosity

"It has to get better, right?"

  7. The helix symbol on the jug is a nice touch.
Heroes saddens me, because I heard about what it was originally going to be: a show about super-powered, angsty people…but DIFFERENT PEOPLE EACH SEASON! Instead we got Heroes, where after season one, any new character who was introduced was practically guaranteed to die, and anyone in season one who didn't have powers (I am pretty sure HRG's power was an unhealthy addiction to covert agencies) would disappear, never to be seen again until the red moon shone full in the sky in front of the sun.
Oh, also: Drink every time Jesse–I mean, Peter–does something nobody in the audience cares about.

  8. Joel the LoFijiNKS podcast was great, I stopped watching Heroes midway through season 2 so listening to you talk about all the crazy bullshit since then was quite amusing.

A couple suggestions. I thought it was a little long, maybe 20-25 minutes instead. Also I think you were too close to the mic or some levels were off because it was picking up alot of throat sounds and tongue clicking.

  9. Drink everytime a problem could have been solved by the characters WORKING TOGETHER and COMMUNICATING WITH THEIR MOUTHS. Seriously, next time "we have to stop sylar/the company/the governement CALL YOUR BROS WITH SUPER POWERS rather then grabing one other person to take on sylar, who has the power of a god at this point.

Also? If using a strike team of badasses works to taser people and "bag-and-tag" (hate this phrase) then bullets would work even better.

    Ok but even better? HANDGRENADES!!

  10. This is so sad to say because I was such a huge fan of the show the first two seasons but really, it kind of ended for me when the writers so obviously couldn't decide if they wanted to make Sylar into Wolverine – the cool, hip, dark anti-hero – or into Dr. Doom – the egotistical super power everyone has to fear but is always doomed to fail due to his own screwed up ego and personal issues.

That and plus all the big finales that seemed to lead up to a big huge fight turned out to be… light flashes under a door. I'll take my two drinks now…

    :-/

  11. It's funny–I decided mid-way through Season One that I was sick of getting the series dribbled out to me in hour-long installments, so I decided to wait for the DVDs. Watched the whole of Season One over a single weekend, thought it was awesome. Made plans to watch Season Two the same way. Never got around to it.

And everything I've heard since then tells me I'm the happiest "Heroes" viewer ever. 🙂

  12. I had no idea that was the last episode what a crock of shit . The least they could do is have a battle worthy of ending the show,i.e. not a open field tackler and staring contest.

I hope the next Science Fiction show that gets pickup up has actual writers and not some fuckwad that has just read a bunch of shitty comics.I seriously wish these people would learn how to finish a story arc.

  13. I know you said to post on the tumblr page if I enjoyed LowFijinks, but there's not actually anywhere to post there. As a fan of the original podcast (though understanding of how real life can prevent that) I'm very grateful for this. It seems like it's really hard for a person to keep a podcast going (heck, how many podcasts has Scott Kurtz started and then stopped that I've listened to? Let's say Six [and the last one was supposed to be like this one, where it only needed him, and that one only made it two episodes]), so I'll take what I can get.

Perhaps you might talk about your favorite TNG episodes in one of these? Or something to that effect. Don't be afraid to talk about something non-current, because podcast listeners probably haven't heard all your stories or rants like your real life friends have.

  14. Based on the drinking game, I'm glad I finally gave up on the show after a few episodes last fall.

Hereos-free for 5 months (or thereabouts)

  15. I can only hope the next sci-fi show that gets on a major network can have a capable writing team. I wonder what Geoff Johns would do with an hour long weekly show?

  16. I fully lost interest just before the Xmas hiatus of Season 3. Sylar had flipped about 4/5 times by that point, Kirsten Bell was crying on a beach or something and I thought – does having superpowers also make you a total moron? And that's when I realised I needed to stop watching. It's very disappointing because the first season held so much promise and it just turned to crap. I'm glad I missed out on the Sylar Batman moment though – how lame. I might try that Sylar Sauce out on my Dr Who dvds though. Taking a drink every time the sonic screwdriver is used, or the Dr says "Ho Yes!" = see you in hospital!

  17. I never understood how a network with a show that was so successful initially as Heroes was could let the writing go so badly. If I had been the head of the network heads would have rolled before it ever got that bad. I would have made sure some of the best sci-fi writers on tv were writing for that show.

  18. Jeph Loeb not only wrote for the show, wasn't he also an executive producer as well? After the writer's strike ended and they forced him out, I was leery of what might happen to a show about super heroes when you kick out the only writer that had experience writing comic books.

In the end though, I just think that this show definitely was a huge victim of the writer's strike. Added to that, they never seemed to be able to recover from the disaster of Season 2 either.

Add one more ingredient into the fire: when they started bringing back the same actors playing in completely different rolls (Ali Larter) they TOTALLY made the show inaccesible to any new viewers. HECK, I watched from the very first episode and I was COMPLETELY lost with whatever they were trying to do with Niki/Jessica and the ice water chick.

    TOTALLY confused after that…

  19. I agree with Chris Flick. I think this show was a victim of the Writer's Strike; after that it never fully recovered, because not only did they do the unforgivable: have you invest on new characters and stories to just leave them by the wayside because of the freakin' strike, which made tons of people lose faith (Season 2 had potential, had they allowed it to grow to it's real conclusion), but then they did the SECOND worst mistake any TV writer can make, and that's try to pander to the online opinions. That's the stupidest thing in the universe. If there's one thing I've learned about "teh internets" is that you'll never please people, and when you think by doing something you'll please most of them, it will just make the others more pissed off and have them gain more support until ultimately everyone's so bitter at you, and you're so busy trying to please everyone and failing, that you then realize you're no longer doing the show you WANTED to make, but it has become lost in other people's vague wishes and unrecoverable.
I still have faith for a 5th and final season, since despite it's flaws I still love the show.

  20. Woo, two weeks late! But I will say that good riddance to bad rubbish as per Heroes. My hubby and I are convinced that the author wanted so badly to write an X-Men show but couldn't get the rights from Marvel (thank god!). It was painful to watch just about every idea in there be ripped off from a source that did it better. But Yay!

P.S. A good drinking game isn't supposed to kill you. Or is this a case of ending your suffering while watching the series?

  21. the abandoned storyline thing would kill you too. I like to drink to those moments when it looks like some lame character is about to get cool, then he ends up getting dragged through time, or he decides to arbitrarily let the villain live, or you remember that he is Grunberg. GRUNBERG!
