The Song Of The Unsuccessful Aquatic Mammal
UPDATE 9/19/09: Thanks to @Alyssa_Milano for sharing this comic with her Tweeps. If you dig the comic and would like to follow me on Twitter, please do.
———————————————————-
… or “The Fail Whale at Tanagra!”
Ironically, Eli and Denise died in a murder/suicide pact moments before Twitter came back online.
So I guess Twitter got attacked by killbots or something yesterday morning. I was asleep until 10am (having stayed up working until 4am the previous night), so I didn’t notice. [Follow me on Twitter, if you want]
- Twitter silenced due to denial of service attack
- Serious Twitter Outage Ongoing
- US firm sues Twitter over patents
- How Did Hackers Cripple Twitter?
- Twitter, Facebook attack targeted one user
Read up on Darmok and the Tamaraians if panel one is confusing at all.
UPDATE ON THE BOOK PRESALE! As of this posting there are only about 10 Ultimate Fancy Editions left!
Seeing as how the Ultimate Fancies are all but sold out, I can officially announce that the preorders for the 150 UF editions have completely paid for the full print run of 1000 copies of HijiNKS Ensue Vol 1: Godspeed, You Fancy Bastard. Thank you all so much for your constant support.

Twitter, Facebook, Livejournal, they all tanked. I'm betting it was some sort of conspiracy, probably propagated by the older generation, to try to get "the kids" off the damn intertubes and back into real life.
August 7th, 2009 at 9:46 am
Twitter was down? :/ I totally missed that.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:21 am
Aww, Eli is such a supportive boyfriend to let Denise tweet "at his face".
This is also another sort of funny if you follow them on the twitters and notice that a good number of their tweets seem to be about their cat watching TV or knocking shit over.
I do call shenanigans on that one tweet being well over 140 characters. Sammichtweet.
August 7th, 2009 at 11:40 am
Oh sweet jesus with a boner on the cross! … You had me at frame one. (though how a phaser fires from a torpedo-tube, I'll never know)
August 7th, 2009 at 11:42 am
more like the old bones are all signing the fuck on–you can't even write nobody no more cause they always like, "Dude! -Come on! My mom's on here!"
August 7th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
Captain Picard, drawing a smiley face in the cloud of gas.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:38 pm
Remember that simpsons episode, where Marge makes Itchy and Scratchy suck, and all the kids go outside and play instead?
It was like that, only bigger.
August 7th, 2009 at 12:39 pm
Also, Eli and Denise… their phones dead, their voices silenced! The fail whale, his belly fat!
August 7th, 2009 at 1:34 pm
I can't stop giggling at Denise's first line! The whole comic is excellent, but the TNG reference is my favourite part. I'd send this to my mum because she raised us on Star Trek (I blame/thank her for my love of sci fi, and am still beaming that she's gotten into Doctor Who [next stop, Firefly, I hope]), but I don't know if she'd get the Twitter part of the joke.
August 7th, 2009 at 1:45 pm
For those who don't get Denise's first line:

Yeah, it was a DNS. Hit Twitter and I think Facebook.
I'm surprised this sort of thing hasn't happened before. Usually when something on the Internet becomes popular, it becomes a big-ass target, and Twitter is so hot it's on fire these days.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:40 pm
That's just because old retirees are discovering the interwebs as a way to entertain themselves and stay in touch with their children who never call.

August 7th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
I tweet at my girlfriends face sometimes but she doesn't like it when I get twitter all over her.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:44 pm
First off, love the TNG reference.
This whole failfest is news to me, as I must have been the only one with said accounts who was too busy WORKING to miss out on this temporary moratorium on this colossal waste of time. Uh, if you will.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:51 pm
Shaka, when the walls fell…
August 7th, 2009 at 5:02 pm
I think Denise's first line is the only litmus test you'll ever need to discern somebody's Geek Level. I chuckled uncomfortably when I immediately recognized the reference.
August 7th, 2009 at 5:09 pm
The River Termerc, in winter! XD
….Darmok on the ocean. ;_;
August 7th, 2009 at 5:26 pm
Goddammit, this made me laugh/made me sad mostly because of that post it twitter about meatball subs… Eli and I constantly have to work together like Darmok and Jalad against Kurby's hunger for cheese.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Its EXACTLY 140. I checked.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:19 pm
Captain Picard with Dr. Crusher. His balls blue.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
AHAHAHAHAHAHAH!~
August 7th, 2009 at 6:20 pm
Give your mum a hug next time you see her. Raising kids on star trek is the right thing to do.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:21 pm
Yeah, they say its "shaka" but half the internet seems to think "chaka." Ill change it if theres a consensus.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:24 pm
Kurby truly is "the beast at Tanagra."
Eli his cheese on the floor.
August 7th, 2009 at 6:38 pm
What do the numbers in brackets mean? The (61) and the (0) on the post-its.
TV Tropes has been having DDoS problems for a while now, and we figured we were a warm-up for whoever's doing this stuff. (Other sites bar Twitter were affected, I heard.) Guess we were right.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:46 pm
Also crap a crap ton of unemployed who have nothing better to do.
August 7th, 2009 at 2:55 pm
Those are remaining characters out of 140
August 7th, 2009 at 7:57 pm
Darmok and Jalad… on the ocean.
*curses work for making her not be at home where the Star Trek is*
August 7th, 2009 at 7:58 pm
I'm not sure if I've just passed beyond laughing or if I just died a little inside… either way, too awesome.
August 7th, 2009 at 9:17 pm
Thought it was DDoS and Facebook's inline AJAX stuff just ground to a halt.
August 7th, 2009 at 9:31 pm
Those would be the number of characters left of your 140 allotment I suspect. ( Or not-alot-ment )
Isn't there some sort of off-line client for Twitter so you can just pile them up and dump them when the beast awakens?
August 7th, 2009 at 9:45 pm
I thought it was shaka. At least IMDB agrees with me on that.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0708696/quotes
Also it sounds like that's what Picard is saying.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGomS2fS3yA&fe...
There ya go research done
Actually I didn't even notice the spelling….my geek subconscious spellcheck must have kicked in and corrected it.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:24 pm
hey, that would be a good idea! like "failwhale protection" because you have a tought, you tweet it, and when you reached the image of the failwhale you already forgot what you wroe.
August 7th, 2009 at 10:35 pm
There is an iPhone app that foes that. Can't remember the name though. There is a whole industry built around Twitters downtime.
August 8th, 2009 at 12:25 am
Twitter was attacked by Libs who were growing increasingly concerned over Conservative Grass-roots movements.
Surprised you guys didn't know that.
August 8th, 2009 at 3:14 am
Congratulations Joel! I think Glen Beck has taken notice of your little web site.
August 8th, 2009 at 6:19 am
He's always emailing me about he wants to gay marry me. It's kind of creepy
August 8th, 2009 at 8:35 am
I didn't get that reference
I'm just starting TNG. I loved the comic. I was in class for most of the morning and I thought my phone was the problem but then I got home and the fraking website didn't work! it was horrible.I felt so disconnected. Yes, I am horribly addicted to twitter.
there's twitddict.com or something like that for when twitter is down. I usually go to friendfeed or tumblr.
August 8th, 2009 at 8:36 am
weird,I haven't had any trouble with tv tropes and I go there all the time.
August 8th, 2009 at 9:36 pm
long story short, is "shaka" an expletive? I'm a little rusty on my ST:TNG trivia & too lazy to look it up myself
August 8th, 2009 at 10:51 pm
number of characters left in a 140-char tweet.
August 8th, 2009 at 10:52 pm
Bwahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
An excellent comic, sir. Just excellent!
August 8th, 2009 at 11:03 pm
Huh. That must be some sort of fad I missed.
August 8th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
We were going down a few hours a day a little while ago. We are still getting 15,000 junk searches a second by DDos-Bots.
August 9th, 2009 at 2:38 am
lol, i should have just looked in the comments before spending 5 minutes counting the characters in the note.
August 10th, 2009 at 3:57 am
I guess I used too many spaces. It is quite exact.
September 1st, 2009 at 6:29 pm
