Do what it says in the title.
We will probably be broadcasting live via Ustream on Friday Night. Don’t think Josh will be there since the last I heard he was dying of throat related illnesses.

Which childhood film has held up the worst for you guys when you've gone back to watch it as adults?
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
If you don't buy something from the HE store, or make a donation you're not fancy…you're just a bastard. Wait, that's not a question. Ok how about this. Masters of the Universe: Tri-Klops vs Trap Jaw for the best original evil sidekick. Conversely, Fisto vs Man-E-Faces for the best good sidekick. Discuss.
p.s. A side question, who else would take the arms off of their He-Man toys and switch them around?

The BBC has done a study to discover the oldest recorded jokes.
Here's an article about it:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/7536918.stm
I found another article listing those jokes ( http://uktv.co.uk/uktv/item/aid/604709 - currently down), and some of the ones I think are funny are below (I took liberties to adjust the timing). Is #3 a gay joke like I think it is?
1. How do you entertain a bored pharaoh? You sail a boat of young women dressed only in fishing nets down the Nile and invite him to go catch a fish (An abridged version first found in 1600 BC on the Westcar Papryus)
2. A man had been married for twenty years to a woman who was blind in one eye. When he found another woman he said to his wife, "I will divorce you because you are blind in one eye." And she answered him: "Have you just discovered that after 20 years of marriage!?" (Egyptian circa 1100 BC)
3. Augustus was touring his Empire and noticed a man in the crowd who bore a striking resemblance to himself. Intrigued he asked: "Was your mother ever in service at the Palace?" "No your Highness," he replied, "but my father was." (Credited to the Emperor Augustus 63 BC – 29 AD)
4. A man starved his donkey in an attempt to teach it not to eat. When the donkey died of hunger, he said "What a loss. Just when he learned it, he died." (Dated to the Philogelos 4th /5th Century AD)
5. Barber: How do you want your hair cut?
King: In silence. (Collected in the Philogelos or "Laughter-Lover" the oldest extant jest book and compiled in the 4th/5th Century AD)

1) How come Joel's wife is never in the comics? I don't believe he would marry someone who wasn't funny or didn't make him laugh.
2) Penny Arcade and PvPonline have rival guilds, on a pvp server, in World of Warcraft. Which one would you join, knowing that you would get to hang out with one set of guys, but have to fight the other. It should be worth noting that Scott Kurtz of PvP is a very large man and knows where you live.
3) What do you guys think of the webcomic done by the Red vs. Blue guys over at http://www.roosterteeth.com? Its a similar comic to HE in that its based (loosley) on real people and more situationally driven then plot driven.
4) If we ask too many questions, does that mean we have to donate?
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Re. #3, I don't think so. I think the implication is that Augustus has slept with too many women to keep track of all his bastards.

Have you guys seen the video of someone beating "Friday the 13th" for the NES in 3 minutes and 2 seconds?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=05rxePZ2YTw
Those were the days, eh?
Looking at other speed runs reminds me, did any of you play "Myst"? I never could figure out what was going on in that game.

Do you guys have any favourite second string comic characters? Black Captain America springs to my mind.

Anyone read Neil Gaiman's "Sandman"?
Thoughts?
Other comments on other Gaiman books (esp. "Good Omens")?

I want your opinions on this. I've been having an ongoing argument with someone about the word "guy." He believes it is entirely neuter, holding no defining gender, and thus can be used to refer to either a dude or a chick. Such as "that guy is so hot" in reference to a chick. I've been arguing the opposite. My question is thus:
Is "GUY" a masculine word, or a neuter one?
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
That sounds like something a moron would say to cover his obviously wrong grammar. Just because you say it all the time doesn't make it right. According to Webster's, guy comes from Guy Fawkes, the British person who attempted to blow up Parliament and assassinate King James I.
Now it does say that "guys" can be gender neutral, referring to a group of people of indiscriminate gender. But that's just basically pluralizing the masculine form in mixed groups, not making a statement on the gender of the singular form.
So I'm leaning to it being masculine, but I'm interested to hear what women think. Have your friend go up to 10 women and call them guy. If none of them look at him funny, maybe it's alright. If he won't say it to their face, then even he doesn't think it's gender neutral.

So Joel is trying to make his dream work. Eli's dream is owning a comic book store. Does any other person at the podcast want to share their dream job, the thing they would do if money weren't a concern?

1) I'm gonna have to go with the whole "Joel is famous, his wife is not" thing.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
It's the whole ellos/ellas thing. Chicks can't be guys singularly. You can't go "I wanna bang that guy" and have it be not weird if you are referring to a girl.

After reading "Those Left Behind," I'm ready to put an unsure foot into the expensive world of Whedon Comics. In particular, which of the countless Buffyverse comics are worth getting? I'd like to hear your thoughts on Season 8 but more so on the other Buffy and Angel comics if you've read them.
Also, what do you think of Joss' Musicals? Do you LOVE them and want more immediately, HATE them and want them to stop, or maybe just LIKE them and would enjoy the possibility of a musical Dollhouse episode?
P.S. SAVE DOLLHOUSE
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
I asked the HE crew about RvB a while back and it turned out that none of them had watched passed the first few episodes. I think that you guys should go back and check it out. You'd probably enjoy RvB's intelligent, vulgar humor and interesting story arcs.
The problem with a lot of web series is that they never seem to think more than one episode into the future. RvB never had this problem. Its story arcs are well thought out and rather complex. In fact, many seem to fault the series (particularly its third season) for being _too_ complex.

I'm not your "guy", buddy.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
Joel, I can't remember if you've answered this or not, but why don't you drink alcohol?
Shitty VHS update: I got it! The post office didn't forward it (even though they were supposed to), and my old roommate neglected to inform me of its arrival in a timely fashion. A review shall commence shortly.

Re. #4: You ought to donate anyway.
February 5th, 2009 at 11:36 am
1. Not counting FireFly, I think Joss Whedon's series premeres (including the first few episodes) have a ham-fisted feeling. Do you think Dollhouse will suffer the same fate, even with the pilot re-shoot?
2. Who wins in this fight: RoboCop Eli, Zombie Denise, Ninja Joel, or Pirate Josh?
3. Follow up to previous: Why is that scenario not already a fighting game?
4. (Not really a question) As a veteran, speaking solely for myself, I really have no objection to everyone's views about war and killing as disscussed previously in the podcast. Even though I was an Army Intelligence weenie and never really a "trigger puller," I still feel some guilt about my job seeing as I contributed to preventable deaths. Ultimately, I'm happy that we can all live in a country where such difference of opinion is accepted and protected by courageous men and women, even if it means we're currently led by a man whose courage is largely in question.
5. Joel or any other -caster, please entertain us with another shitty job experience.

1) Star wars clone wars – epic or fail? Also how much does it rip off Genndy Tartakovsky's series?
2) Have you seen the Top Gear American road trip episode? How staged do you think the "red neck incident" was?
Incident – http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rq-kK7GEb7M&fe...
3) My "depressing" question of the week – Regarding the Large Hadron Collider is the pursuit of scientific knowledge worth risking wiping us all out via black holes, the collapse of reality, etc?

Joel, hang in there with the experiment. I'll be spreading the word at PAX later this month.
Eli, please follow through on your comic shop/bar/saloon idea, but don't become Service Merchandise. If it's open to kids in the afternoon and adults at night, you might just have a hit hangout. Take a hint from Joel, live your dream job, only you can make it happen.

Okay lets go slightly Desert Island disks here, you're going to be trapped on an island for the rest of your life and you're only able to take three items with you, none of them can be used to escape and none of them can be a person, go!
