Very inspirational, hope everything works out for you and I'll do my best to support you. Which won't be hard cause I'm loving everything you put out.

    video is serious business.

    tits or GTFO

If you also decide to have whimsical videos as well as serious and awesomely candid videos, you should hit us with some Rick =P

do you want response here or would it help you to put it on youtube? subscriptions, comments, favorites, etc?

  5. Wadmaasi

    "Insight," you fancy bastard!

  6. Wadmaasi

Fuck yes about kids. Our son is ~10mos old.

  7. Paul

Sounds like a plan, you fancy bastard! Looking forward to following along. I subscribed to the video blog as well.

  8. iptydafu

2 things: 1.) chroma-key; 2.) that mathmos crap from Barbarella

  9. eli5537

….hey does these mean you are going to start paying us for the podcast? i only ask because my pastor wants to know why i have not been showing up for Jesus Worship™ for the past two months…

  10. aaron6928

Good job. Keep posting them and I'll do my best to introduce the site to new people. I'm rooting for you to succeed.

  11. shoo6055

Joel, wish you the best of luck with this experiment. My coworker and I have been faithful readers and podcast listeners for the past few months. Almost a day doesn't go by that we don't make a reference to Hijinks Ensue and trade quotes over the cubicle walls. I think you've tapped into something great. Just don't put a Lima bean in your mouth, cause it tastes like a fart.

  12. doug5364

Nice point about models–observing Coulton's process, then documenting your own as a model for others.

Hope you also saw the last South Park (Canada on Strike)–it had some good ideas about earning a living using teh interweb.

  13. jedimumbo8239

That was your Jerry Maguire moment.
…and yes, you complete us all.
Keep it up. I hope I can catch up to Battlestar in time to not get spoilered. Keep warning me before you let Cylons slip.

  14. john_darc6624

the thing i dug about JoCo was that he said he didn't want his daughter to live in a household where people didn't take risks and attempt to do what they love.

  15. demiakumu7096

Godspeed to you too joel. you know ever since I found Joco, it's brought me to so many other wonderful things, spiffworld on youtube introduced me to jo co from there I found portal and from portal I found you…amazing stuff…

Good luck man, I hope this comic gains the popularity and of course the money that CAD and Penny arcade gain. Ill pray for this sites success.

I really appreciate hearing this from new commenters. I read about Jill Sobule's efforts and I was quite inspired. She actually recently reached her goal of $75K. Thats pretty fantastic for someone who isnt in the mainstream at all. Thanks for the encouragement.

  18. hijinksensu5337

When you make that decision, I suggest you go with the one that makes you the happiest person and not necessarily the safest one.

  19. hijinksensu5337

I really dont want to discourage people from going to college. It just wasnt right for me and its NOT the only way to get what you want out of life. As long as you know there are other options you'll be fine.

  20. hijinksensu5337

I hadnt heard that song yet. Thank you. Will that man ever cease to inspire me?

  21. hijinksensu5337

As in my 100% Natural Family Band Solution?

  22. hijinksensu5337

Its the same as what Im trying to do. You, as an artist, actually have the option of putting yourself out there to the entire world for little to no money. This wasnt possible even 5 years ago.

  23. hijinksensu5337

Thank you. I appreciate the kind words.

  24. hijinksensu5337

Thats for HE Platinum club members only.

  25. hijinksensu5337

    Thank you.

  26. hijinksensu5337

I would say respond here since I am more likely to see it, but do whichever you are most comfortable with. I think the video blog is going to be "serious" for the most part, but Im sure Ill think of something funny to do.

  27. hijinksensu5337

Capture this moment as vividly as you can and then think about it when he's 12 months. You'll think its a different kid.

  28. hijinksensu5337

    Thanks, Paul!

  29. hijinksensu5337

I have no idea what you are talking about? Is there sage advice concealed in your riddles?

  30. hijinksensu5337

Does the fact that I have a $0 income mean im going to start paying you? Yes. Thats exactly what it means.

  31. hijinksensu5337

Keep recruiting new Fancy Bastards! The effort needs you!

  32. hijinksensu5337

Dude, again, super surreal moment hear. People are quoting this stuff in there cubicles.

  33. hijinksensu5337

That episode was so weird. It was worth it for the internet star showdown.

I really do want to be patient 1 (if coulton is patient 0) of this "I can do what I want with my life" idea. I think there is a new roadmap for creative people (artists, bands, whatever) and this is the first step.

  34. hijinksensu5337

Whoah. I think we've already spilled 4 of the final 5. You need to get caught up because I am POSITIVE we will be discussing this on the podcast.

The human brain weighs 3 pounds.

    You had me at "frak."

  35. tankobite7649

God be with you man; I really hope this works out for you and your family! Like Winston Churchill said, "Never, never, in nothing great or small, large or petty, never give in except to convictions of honour and good sense. Never yield to force; never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy.'

    'God speed, you fancy bastard!

  36. hijinksensu5337

My thing, and I was saving this for the ever "in progress" manifesto is that I didnt want to be ashamed when my daughter asked me what I did for a living. If I had to answer "I sell websites and it makes me miserable" I would have been ashamed. My goal is to have an answer I can be proud of before she can ask that question.

  37. hijinksensu5337

I really do believe this is the way of things to come. Creative people interacting directly with their fans and bypassing big business entirely.

  38. hijinksensu5337

Thank you Caleb. I dont think Im even shooting for PA money (they are generating millions each year) but I am hoping to earn a modest living.

  39. aaron6928

Also now you can Rick Roll truly Rick Roll us. We got Rick Rolled in the podcast but it won't be quite as effective as a Rick Roll with video. I already watched this video blog with the thought of that as a possibility in the back of my mind.

  40. rerun7088

Great work man, I hope all goes well for you. I'm kind of in the same position in my life right now where I have to make some foreboding decisions that will shape my future so i know how you feel. You should do just fine man, you make me laugh which helps me get through the day so on a personal level, thank you and keep putting your heart into it… You fancy bastard…

  41. orf8297

Best of luck to you. I have been enjoying the comic and the podcasts since I discovered it a few months ago. I like the way your art has changed and evolved as the strip has gone on, and you have a knack for dialogue. And basically you and your idiot (in a good way) friends rape my funny bone "on the regular" in your podcasts. I've been raising my fist and gravely declaring "Godspeed you Fancy Bastard" at opportune moments around the office and it really makes the workplace more enjoyable for everyone. Also, I think a lot of brave, creative people are forging new ways of doing things. JoCo has gone global, Jill Sobule is taking pledges on her website to make her new album, and you have joined their brave ranks. Break free from the corporate hegemony, O Son of Coulton! Fuck the brick and mortar dinosaurs right in the money hole, you Fancy Bastard!

  42. eli5537

well i was never really good in Jesus Worship™ anywho…alright i'll keep doing it for free. plus the power of the podcast is like the dark side. it's way better because you get the best of both worlds…

  43. aj5558

I cannot say enough how much I commend you for making the attempt to go from doing HE as just a side project to making it your bread and butter. Resources aside, what's holding me back is my fear of failure. But you, and by a greater extent, Jonathan Coulton serve as inspirations–you're doing what you want to be doing, regardless of the risk involved.

What really surprised me is to know you didn't have a post-high school education. I always figured you to be a 4-year degree man and everything. When you said that you didn't go because you knew that you really couldn't do what you really loved anyway by going to college, that really struck a chord with me. I've felt the exact same way and don't have any formal degree to show for my half-hearted efforts in doing something else.

But I've digressed. I wish you a Universe of luck and I know that if you love it as much as you said you do and dedicate yourself to it, you will come out on top.

Your success is already starting to show through–we've adopted the collective name of the Fancy Bastards with no hesitation.

Go for it, Joel! We got your back.

  44. iptydafu

A green-screen where you appear to be floating around in a crazy multi-colored oil and water universe. -I'd stay the hell out of the Pleasure Organ, though. I don't imagine it's cleaned on a regimented schedule.

  45. Zac

"Don’t live another day unless you make it count
There’s someone else that you’re supposed to be
There’s something deep inside of you that still wants out
And shame on you if you don’t set it free."
    Good luck to you Joel.

  46. doug5364

    Internet star showdown FTW.

I'm a classical/opera singer. Was talking with colleagues today about how lots of young singers (who could be working professionally) can't even get auditions. We started brainstorming about how to use YouTube etc. to build up a singer's reputation enough to help them get into the companies they'd like to work with. That's a hard connection to make (now).

  47. rerun7088

It's time to get Funke Joel… Funke… (I hope you get that reference)

  48. hijinksensu5337

I wonder if Churchill had webcomics in mind when he said that? What am I saying? Of course he did.

  49. doug5364

The problem is for those who want to be doing opera, which requires getting connected with a producing organization–an opera company. The companies aren't (yet) looking to the net for casting, so while a singer can build a reputation online, it won't lead to getting hired by a company. That's the missing step(s) for now.
