I always assumed he was Irish in origin because his accent sounds anything but Scottish. From time to time he sounds plain English which confuses things further. IMDB says Henry Ian Cusick's parents are Scottish and Peruvian. Lostpedia lists Desmond as being from both Scotland (though he was in the Scottish Military it doesnt say if he was born there) and Essex, England, where he lived with Penny. I can understand the mistake though. Despite being Irish and living near the Scottish border I have yet to hear an accent quite like his. I mean, it's all over the place.
